2016 Vw Beetle Dune For Sale – Volkswagen’s Beetle Dune concept was first shown at the 2000 Los Angeles Auto Show and is now being produced and sold in South Africa 16 years later.
If you’re old enough, you’ll remember the beach buggy – based on the original standard Beetle, but with higher ground clearance, chunky tires to handle off-road trails, and hopefully a roll-off collar… a Volkswagen Beetle. The Dune is wider than the base Beetle and comes fitted with 18-inch Canyon wheels.

The Beetle Dune has a 14mm increase in ground clearance over the standard Beetle, making it 7mm wider at the front and 6mm wider at the rear. New front and rear bumpers and diffusers are fitted, while the round headlights are still recognizable. The front features a large central air intake with a black honeycomb screen within a reflective silver frame. Fog lights and indicators, meanwhile, are set in matte black inserts.
The newcomer’s profile features solid black cladding for the wheel arches and side moldings, while anodized aluminum window trims and exterior mirrors are finished in Mirror Silver. A double black stripe appears above the side panel bearing the “DUNE” signature.
Head to the rear and you’ll see a large rear spoiler and new LED taillights. The rear spoiler is painted in gloss black on top and body color on the bottom. The rear diffuser is also finished in reflective silver.
Buyers can choose from three Dune Beetle colors, including Pure White, Reflective Silver, or the new Sandstorm Yellow (shown here). A black painted roof is also available as an option.

Three design elements define Beetle Dune’s interior. The dashboard is painted Sandstorm Yellow Metallic as standard with the window trim, which can be changed to black if desired. Second, the surround and main instrument panel are finished in Sandstorm Yellow, and finally, the rear and front sport seats, center armrest, handbrake lever, gear lever and floor mats have Curry Yellow contrast stitching. The front seats also feature the “DUNE” logo.
On the equipment side, the Dune is equipped with Volkswagen’s Composition Color infotainment system, which includes a radio/CD player (with 8 speakers) and a 5-inch touchscreen. The system is compatible with MP3, Bluetooth, SD card slot, USB and includes additional ports. The 6.5-inch Composition Media and Discover Media systems with navigation are available as options and are available with Fender audio systems.
The Fender system includes three adjustable ambient lighting colors (white, red and blue), speaker ambient lighting, four tweeters, front and rear speakers, and a bass box subwoofer located in the trunk. The system is powered by a 10-channel amplifier with 400W output.
Other interior upgrades include automatic headlight activation, manual lumbar support (front), illuminated vanity mirrors, cruise control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing windshield wipers, front and rear parking distance control, and hill hold assist. Optional features include titanium black Vienna leather sports seats and xenon headlights with separate LED daytime running lights.

It’s one of those cars that I didn’t expect to like, but was pleasantly surprised. Shall I buy one? No, but in general I would never buy a beetle. They’re not just me. However, the dunes have some really cool properties.
The powertrain has enough wake to get those bugs moving. Shifts are moderately quick, as they come from the conventional torque-converter automatic transmission rather than Volkswagen’s DSG dual-clutch transmission. The car goes uphill quickly with no problems, but you have to put the pedal to the floor to get through.
The steering is a bit rubbery and the thin steering wheel feels like a wire hanger at my fingertips. We recommend using thicker wheels. The Dune has a slightly higher rise than the rest of the Beetle lineup, and we think it could have been a little softer.

In fact, the gold and black paint scheme of the dunes looks impressive in the sun. I liked the yellow GSR better that I had a few years ago. Because I channeled Super Beetle. The VW and Turbo logos on the back are nice.
Overall, it’s definitely a standout if you’re interested. And since the Beetle has a cult following of its own, I think they’ll sell Dune a lot. The reason Volkswagen designed this product was because of the love it received after its auto show debut.
As Jake mentioned, you have to be a Beetle enthusiast before you can be a Dune designer. So let’s assume you’re already a fan of the current unique Beetle design. Once you get past that hurdle, there’s a lot to like here, especially at the reasonable $27,000 sticker price. The Dune Edition looks distinct, and the body-color trim panels on the inside have a black adhesive feel. A large sunroof helps, too, and even though it’s all economy class, everything feels good and fits the MSRP. Pure Volkswagen Turbo 4… that is, one of the best in its field. Power when you need it, shifting when you want it, amazing fuel economy – all from a smooth, unobtrusive powertrain. The car is fast but not fast. Volkswagen Beetle Dune Concept First Drive Review
At launch, the Dune is available with two engines: a 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol with 103 horsepower and a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel with 148 horsepower. Gearbox options include a standard 6-speed manual and optional 6- or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Originally unveiled as a concept at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, the Beetle Dune sought to offer a similar appeal to the standard version of the second-generation modern Beetle, adopting a more robust design, increased ground clearance, and larger wheels and tires.
