This time, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the Underworld (apparently rabbit holes were so in 2010) through a giant mirror, and in a gloriously nonsensical world, she’s on a mission to save the sick Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). Her family has disappeared and Alice must travel back in time with the help of the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) to solve the mystery of what happened to her friend’s family.
Along the way, we learn how the Red Queen (played by scene-stealer Helena Bonham-Carter) became so evil and meet Sacha Baron-Cohen, who is the first in the franchise to also be a half-human, half-god .mechanic. who helps Alice travel through time.
Some critics derided the film, just as they derided the first film before it grossed over a billion, and even though there is a new creator in the director’s chair, the aesthetic of the film remains the same. , thanks to celebrity costume designer Colleen Atwood. Inspired by Japanese designs from the 1980s and Lewis Carroll’s original books, Atwood once again returned to Underland (she worked in
Alice Through The Looking Glass
), to make the entire film more whimsical, more dramatic and extremely magical. However, this time she was challenged to dress up each character while traveling through time.
“Lewis Carroll’s second book is a different Underland story that plays with the past, present and future … it was interesting to see the story told in a non-linear way,” Atwood explains. “The challenges for me were different because I had to portray the characters at different stages of their lives.”
The first costume Atwood tackled was Wasikowska: Alice is, after all, the central character. These days, the pre-production process for movies is much shorter—it’s an “early start,” as Atwood describes it. She says that often drawing patterns, making muslin dresses for fittings and shopping for fabric happen at the same time.
“We needed yards and yards of vintage-looking fabric for Alice’s Chinese-influenced costume, but we knew we couldn’t find it anywhere (and even if we did, vintage fabric is very, very fragile). we embroidered 70 yards of plain blue silk to create the look we wanted,” says Atwood.

Atwood immediately fell in love with the Australian actress. “You couldn’t find a more perfect Alice than Mia … she is Alice,” Atwood says. “Its style is a natural, vintage look at the surface world and it’s different from the first film. She’s come back from the sea and she’s grown up and empowered, so she’s no longer the traditional Alice in the blue dress with the fluffy hair.”
The designer also makes a very interesting point about how Carroll envisioned Alice. “The girl Carroll based Alice on had long hair at a time when most girls were extremely feminine, with chestnut hair and big dresses,” says Atwood. “You could say she was a forward-thinking girl for her time, and I love the idea of a girl who’s a little outside the box and creates her own world, and I think that’s an exciting message for women in general.”
Atwood needed to reflect this emotion in Alice’s costumes, so he cleverly made Alice’s pants disguised as dresses. Arriving in London, Alice is first introduced in “a navy blue coat with a high collar and gold braided lapels (similar to what a sea captain would wear).”
She then appears at Ascot Mansion wearing an “oriental lavender organza top” that she bought while traveling. “This is based on old fabrics from China with Chinese-style embroidery and medallions and a subtle background of hats, rabbits and a little ‘A’ for Alice,” says Atwood. “Next we see Alicia in a military haircut, white linen and blue trim, based on a Royal Navy uniform.” of the same name.
