As the series celebrates its 25th anniversary, former editor Luke Lancaster, who watched Power Rangers as a kid, and longtime fan assistant editor Mike Sorrentino look back at those decades of morphine action. By that we mean Luke tries to guess what’s going on based on the show’s increasingly vague titles, and Mike tells us what each version of the show actually is.

Luke: O.G. The Rangers. Rangers of my childhood. Honestly, real teenagers seem like a pretty weak prerequisite for recruiting a superhero team. Are they legally allowed to go behind the wheel of those giant robots?
Mike: Yeah, if a 16-year-old kid was given the keys to a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex, we’d all run! Power Rangers is the basis for the Japanese television show Super Sentai, which has aired continuously since 1977. The MMPR scenes with the teenagers were filmed in the US, then interspersed with the Super Sentai fight scenes.

Power Rangers: The Evolution Of Costumes Throughout The Years
Luke: I’ve seen more Rangers than the first series, but I was wrong. I guess it’s the youngsters who can still be ninjas in motorcycle helmets. Are they from another planet?
Mike: Kind of. This short, 10-episode series connects the third season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers with the subsequent Power Rangers Zeo series. Time on Earth has been reversed with the “Doomsday Orb”, leaving the previous Ranger team too small to save the world. Billy is able to become an adult again, but as this happens, the Power Coins that give the Rangers their powers are destroyed. Fortunately, Jordan calls his friends on the planet Aquitar, who happen to be Power Rangers. They protect the world while everyone follows the shards of the Zeo Crystal that return Earth to its original time.
Luke: I misread it as “Zero”. Pumpkin smashing I meant to joke. Instead, I’m guessing it’s when Power Rangers decided to go all out in the Expanded Universe and ditch the interconnected backstories and lore.
Mike: No, they manage to keep the story going. The Zeo Crystal from Alien Rangers returns to Earth in 1996 and serves as a new power source for the five Guardians. Other highlights include Blue Ranger Billy taking on the role of technical advisor instead of being a Ranger, a new villain in the form of the Machine Empire, and the return of original Red Ranger Jason (fresh from “Peace Conference”) a new Gold. . the ranger

Mike: Yes! It was the only season of Power Rangers to have a movie debut. In Turbo: Power Rangers, an intergalactic pirate kidnaps a witch so she can marry a demon, with the role of Blue Ranger being given to a boy named Justin, who every time he grows up Extends one leg.

Mike: Funny thing about this… they didn’t really spend much time in space during the series. Hoping to rescue the captured Jordan, the rest of the Rangers hijack a spaceship for a rescue mission. They land on the Astro Megaship where they meet the Red Space Ranger Andros, who gives the rest of the team new Ranger powers. They then spend most of their time protecting Earth.
Ultimately, the series actually serves as a conclusion to the Power Rangers storyline that began in 1993 and ended (warning: 20-year spoiler alert) with Jordan sacrificing himself to save the universe. Yes, Zordon is dead.
Luke: It’s supposed to be a direct sequel to Power Rangers in Space, right? They just lose. But Lost in Space was clearly filmed. Jeopardy, Will Robinson.
Mike: In a way, you’re absolutely right. This is the first Power Rangers series not directly related to the previous season. This is a step in line with Super Sentai Model, which changes its cast and costumes every year. However, there have been many sequels that incorporate ideas from Power Rangers in Space (Bulk and Alpha 6 still exist).

A new team of Power Rangers protect a space colony looking for a new place for humans to live. The show marks the first time a Ranger has been killed off on the show, as Pink Ranger actress Valerie Vernon died after being diagnosed with leukemia in real life. They eventually brought the character back, but not until the end of the season.

Luke: I’m going for the trifecta, saying that completes the trio. Because how else to save someone in a lost galaxy?
Mike: Wrong, although the Lost Galaxy Rangers do make a cameo. The series brings the action back to Earth and is the first series in which the Power Rangers do not hide their identities. It is also the first in the series to feature a Ranger who is not a character from the Japanese “Super Sentai” series — the Titanium Ranger was created just for the show.

Mike: Oh man, you only get one season with that guess! It was the first season to be filmed in New Zealand, where the show is still filmed today. In another format change, this season begins with a team of just three Rangers and will eventually expand to include three more.
Luke: All this time they’ve had cars like Zords and now they finally have dinosaurs? (Note that only three of the original five Zords were actually dinosaurs. This still bugs me).
