Apollo 13 Movie – Ron Howard’s gripping historical space thriller has taught us a lot about the disappointing expectations of our present moment (and the determination to overcome them).
Most movies, especially those from American studios, teach us to expect the basics from good guys. They set out to achieve their goals, and through trial and error, they usually achieved them in a satisfying two-hour period. Ron Howard
Apollo 13 Movie
The Doomed Journey that the film portrays) is the rare studio film that denies such expectations from audiences. It’s about the utterly, utterly catastrophic failure to get things done, and the disappointment we feel when things don’t go as planned. It’s also what makes it essential viewing in a world brought to a standstill by a global pandemic.
In Some Ways, Making ‘apollo 13’ Was ‘impossible’ For Ron Howard
If halfway through, Indiana Jones gets a flat tire in Cairo, the rest of the movie is trying to get back to his boring teaching job in Connecticut. You wonder how cool it would be to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis got it.
It’s rare for a major studio blockbuster to focus on “what could have happened,” but now we find ourselves in a world where everyone’s life on Earth is derailed. Graduations, funerals, jobs, weddings (including mine) have been postponed, canceled or changed so much that they are nothing like we had hoped. another question is
What we’re facing now is, “So what are you going to do?” he asked. Do we curl up in a ball and float into oblivion, or come together and figure out how to survive?
Clear. Go to the Moon and return safely to Earth. Astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Hayes (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) know, in Neil Armstrong’s done The world has been freed from the magic of space travel after something no one has done before. During the Apollo 11 mission. Still, even if you’re not the first, it’s still amazing to be able to say you’ve touched the surface of the moon and observed a tiny Earth in the vastness of space.

Two days into the mission, a faulty wire caused an explosion that drained precious oxygen from the spacecraft, causing those on board to shut down vital systems to conserve power and use their tiny lunar module as a lifeboat. Meanwhile, the men and women (unfortunately, in this film, all men) at NASA Mission Control work to bring them home alive. The original goal of landing on the moon is gone.
Howard has us broken up with the characters from the start. Instead of watching the entire historic Apollo 11 broadcast, we watch Lovell watch it, a trick Howard uses throughout the film. We can see all the hopes and dreams of the moon in Hank’s eyes.

By the way, this movie has been released for any movie cast. Just three years, starting from 1992

Hanks went from likable actor in most good comedies to two-time Oscar winner and once-in-a-lifetime talent. And if
Ending his Best Actor streak, he’s still all about it. With his solid, understated performance, he cemented his status as the “everyman actor” we root for to this day. There’s a reason why news of Hanks’ positive COVID-19 test in March made many people realize we’re living in a different world now.
The devastation of a failed mission is lost when we see the explosion that nearly kills the astronauts in space, but when we see the astronauts looking out of the module’s small window, on their way home through the darkness of the moon face to face. After years of training, hard work and hopeful expectations, it all floats like their oxygen reserves. Totally heartbroken when we saw Lovell
The theme of disappointment begins before astronaut Ken Mattingly’s (Gary Sinise) mission begins. With only a few days until the launch, Mattingly had to be removed from the Apollo team due to a possible measles infection. It’s a microcosm of how the entire movie deals with how people deal with painful disappointment, and Sinise’s performance captures that beautifully. The look on his face when he gets the bad news tells us everything we need to know. All that time stuck in the flight sim seemed to be of no avail until he realized his skills could still be put to good use.

For the remainder of the film, Sinise reflects on the redemption arc he experienced last year as Lieutenant Dan
.He hit rock bottom of self-pity before returning to work to try to save his friend. His idea of shunting the few amps in the lunar module was to get them through the final hurdle of re-entering Earth’s atmosphere without rebounding.
Another important character who isn’t part of the actual mission is Lovell’s wife, Marilyn (Katherine Quinlan). “The Worried Wife of an Important Man” is partly a thankless role on Mount Rushmore, but Quinlan shows us how we deal with our own lives by showing all our worries about the Apollo 13 crew. Anxiety in the process, thereby avoiding common pitfalls.
Her worst nightmare, which Howard describes in an intense dream sequence in which her husband falls from a spaceship and floats in darkness, mostly comes true. Seeing her fight so hard for her family was her worst fear, and it slowly became a reality for many.
Apollo 13 Celebrates 25th Anniversary
With unemployment at an all-time high and watching our government leaders fail us on every front, every day we are seeing our worst fears come true. Seeing a strong woman like Marilyn brave and poised in the face of horrific events beyond her control is a powerful reminder that we can get through it.
It doesn’t have all the answers to our current situation, and it suffers from the same major flaws as Howard’s other films — many
.The early American space program was dominated by white men, but we know that African Americans played a key role in the space race. Not a single black person can be seen in any frame of any scene that takes place at a NASA facility. Did I mention the lack of women?
Howard also fails to describe the social unrest that occurred in the United States at the same time as the Apollo missions. If you want a movie that deals with this dynamic, you can check out the underrated Damien Chazelle
Did Ron Howard Exaggerate The Reentry Scene In apollo 13?
, but even that largely avoided the political turmoil brewing in the country in the late 1960s.
Ron Howard could be the movie version of Ed Harris cutting the military-inspired crew into a film. Clean, by the books, very unobtrusive. But what Howard brought to the table of value was used inside
During the first half of the 20th century, Howard’s films saw the kindness and resilience of people in the face of insurmountable odds.
When all hope was lost and the Apollo 13 crew ran out of precious oxygen in seconds, there was grief and utter disappointment at not getting to the moon, but then they got to work. They mobilize all their resources and solve problems one by one to get the crew home. When we all grieve for what we have lost now, we too can take action, as we have already seen with mass protests against police brutality and systemic racism.

Rewatching it might not be the obvious wake-up call we need as a society right now, but it’s an entertaining reminder that we, as a species, can have good sides. The goals and plans we once had may now be out of reach, but disappointments in our personal lives can make us realize that there are more important missions, such as making the future better for all human beings.
