Avatar Last Airbender Book 1 – . Unfortunately for Nickelodeon, the love of my life growing up was Cartoon Network, which always provided me with great anime and cartoons. It also meant I missed out on one of the best cartoons I’ve ever watched, so I recently decided to indulge in a first season binge. This is such an uplifting and inspiring animation that touches on some amazing themes. The writing is excellent as are the characters and their development throughout the story.
Starting with Aang, who is always happy no matter the situation: growing up doesn’t necessarily mean aging. Katara and Sokka are just pure spunk and family bonding. The characters’ dynamics and dialogue with each other are incredibly strong. Coupled with animation and: voila, magic. I’m so glad I was finally able to watch the anime everyone always talks about and it was worth it. I decided to share some of my favorite moments from the show and lessons learned:
Avatar Last Airbender Book 1
King Omashu: There is something so sweet and innocent about Aang and how he can remain a child and enjoy life despite the burdens on him. Seeing how King Bumi was with Aang and how he taught her the importance of thinking outside the box while enjoying life.
Rotten Tomatoes: Movies
Aang comforts Hei Bai and talks to Avatar Roku: I loved this episode and it shows how Aang can keep peace not only between humans but also spirits, how he gives Hei Bai hope that his forest will grow. again Also, how he is summoned to the spirit world by a previous incarnation, Roku, and what Aang goes to do with him after making the seal.
Zuko saves Aang: I know Zuko has his own plans, but he still went and saved Aang from the Fire Nation. Zuko managed to fight and win, and managed to keep it up without relying on his normal moves. I found Zuko to be a very interesting character with a lot of storytelling potential.
Katara fights Master Pakku for her rights and the chance to learn waterbending: in the Northern Water Tribe, women are not allowed to learn waterbending, only healing. After Master Pakku refuses to teach Katara, she challenges him to a fight, and although she doesn’t win, she still wins. She is able to win his respect and become his student. I think it was one of the most inspiring moments of the season.
Siege of the North Battle to Protect the Moon Spirit: It turns out that Admiral Zhao of the Fire Nation was able to figure out a way to kill the Moon Spirit without thinking about the consequences. Aang then enters the Avatar State and joins the Water Spirit to destroy the Fire Nation in an awesome battle. Princess Yu then gives her life to the moon spirit, restoring the balance between yin and yang. It was beautifully done, albeit bittersweet, and tied in well with many of the season’s themes.

As much as I appreciate what the manga brings, here are a few reasons why Cardcaptor Sakura works so much better for me than the anime.
