Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting a mini-revamp. The Nickelodeon original series and spin-off Legend of Korra have been among Netflix’s most-watched series since arriving on the streaming service in recent months.

No spoilers here, but despite being three “Books” long, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a self-contained narrative that certainly could have gone further, especially with members of The Fire Nation. Although some threads were picked up later in the Legend of Korra schedule, Konietzko and DiMartino told Polygon (opens in new tab) that season 4/book 4 wasn’t on their minds at the time.
“Not by us, not by Nickelodeon, there shouldn’t be a season 4,” Konietzko said. “Mike and I planned [The Last Airbender] to be a three-season arc in 2002, and in 2008 we finished the story we wanted to tell.” DiMartino added, “We finished the show as planned.”

But DiMartino gives hope to those who want new stories in the world of The Last Airbender, especially given the popularity of the franchise’s comics and books. “There are seeds that we’ve planted through both the series and the graphic novels that can be expanded and explored,” he hinted. “The Avatar universe is a big place with a long history, so there’s a lot of potential for new stories.”

Regarding the ATLA and season 4 speculation, I would first warn anyone that unfortunately there are several “fake interviews” with me spreading false information – so it’s hard to say whether these specific topics are true or not. The truth is that the original plan of the creators (Mike and Brian) was always to show only three seasons. When I was writing the show, Nickelodeon asked me to think about what the fourth season would be, and I also had a brief conversation with Mike. But in the end, Mike and Brian decided to end the story where we left off, and based on people’s love for the series, I’d be hard-pressed to say that was a mistake! I’m not sure the ideas for season 4 were used in the comics or Korra as Mike, and I never got into an episode with him.
