A Guide To Avatar The Last Airbender Graphic Novels
Trouble reignites among the afflicted in the Fire Nation, and Luan Luen Yang completes yet another unexpected chapter, but this time it’s predictable. Even though the fire got some attention in the first episode, many won’t know until the second episode is over. Aang and Fire Lord Zuko learned that the spirits known as the Kemurikage don’t work between generations, so the creatures now abducting children must be some kind of trickster, which doesn’t make it any easier for them. Unfortunately, dealing with Zuko’s situation could fuel the fire of anger against him.
Kidnapped kids are featured more than once, and Gurihiru pulls out all the stops to make them look cute and adorable. It is accompanied by the usual fantastic animated cartoon. Despite being a darker story than most Avatar graphic novels, most of the characters have such joy on their faces.
Another indicator of how good Yang’s writing is. Most other writers would have let it lie when they revealed what the Kemurikage’s current characters are, but Fire Mai once summed up Mai’s personality and youth perfectly. It all culminates in a fight that would actually happen, as Zuko makes a mistake in research, but Yang waits for the show, not artificially enhancing something, but advancing an idea. It reinforces a strong character approach that is surprising and ultimately more memorable than just one fight. If it needs to be reinforced, the final epilogue pages showing Ursa’s reunion with her ex-husband are beautifully written, very powerful scenes. A few words that had come out of Zuko’s mouth before them could have been equally used by America when they were published.
As always, Smoke and Shadow is best enjoyed as a single hard copy. The second episode reveals Katara and Sokka’s plans to return home and begin their journey north and south. Avatar: The Last Airbender Comic Reading Order
This fourth episode between Luan Luen Yang and Gurihiru continues the series of wonderful stories they created together.
The most featured Fire Nation of the four nations that make up the world of Avatar, the new ruler Zuko is put to the test once again, along with Smoke and Shadow. Although circumstances have changed, he wants to chart a new course for a once expanding nation, and convincing his people to stand by him is no easy task. The new Ozai society is named after the former ruler, many of whom are behind their plans to overthrow Zuko and return to their old ways, with powerful new allies in the Kemurikage. Believed to be a myth until recently seen, the stories were told to keep children in line, not abusers. The political turmoil is intense for May, whose father leads the rebels and who recently ended her relationship with Zuko (see The Promise).
Despite its name, Smoke and Shadow are more straightforward than the first characters of the Fire. It twists and turns, but it’s a real bombshell that’s really predictable. That’s because Yang unravels some complicated relationships, and by the end we know exactly where some people stand. This is mixed with all the emotions that come with Ursa returning home to the Fire Nation for the first time since her exile. The story is darker than any of the previous Avatar graphic novels, and Gurihiru’s visual sophistication is such a strong emotional mix that it all doesn’t descend into melodrama.
There may be some parallels between Fire Nation and the United States at the time of the story’s creation, but Fire’s narrative cautions against trading freedom for safety without much consideration.
