When I spoke with Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino, creators of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, they said they decided to act as if a live-action movie didn’t exist. The law of chance suggests that something should have gone as it should. not here It hits the nail in the coffin of low-rent 3D, but it needs a lot more coffins.
Do I Need To Watch Avatar: The Last Air Bender (2010) Before I Watch Avatar: The Way Of Water (2022)?
Let’s start with 3D, which was added after 2D cinema. Not only is it underutilized, unnecessary, and barely noticeable, it’s a disaster even if you love 3D. M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptations produce some of the most boring, dark, and dirty films I’ve seen in years. You know something is wrong when your screen fills with flames with a faded Polaroid. It’s a known fact that 3D reduces perceived brightness, but “Airbender” looks like it was shot with a dirty lens.
Now to the movie itself. The first fateful decision was to turn a material that was created into an animation into a live action. Drawing on the bright colors and “clean lines” style of masters like Miyazaki, the animations from the Nickelodeon TV series were a joy to watch. It is the nature of animation that makes an absurd visual spectacle even more believable.
‘Airbender’ is about manipulating humans with the power of air, earth, water, and fire, so there are few incidents that can be confirmed with credible live action. But the special effects are terrible. First waterbender Katara summons a ball of water then splashes it on her brother Sokka but he doesn’t even get wet. Firebenders’ flames don’t really seem to burn.
The story takes place in the future where humans have destroyed the Earth and survived in the form of beings with magical powers that can affect Earth, Water and Fire. The Avatar keeps these warring factions in uneasy harmony, but the Avatar is gone and Earth lives in constant chaos caused by warring Firebenders.

Our teenage heroes Katara and Sokka find a child in the ice. This is Aang (Noah Ringer) and they start to suspect he might be the Avatar or the Last Airbender. Perhaps he can bring harmony and subdue violent mobs. The plot is incomprehensible except for a useful direction as we love Katara, Sokka and Aang against their foes.
Dialogue is presented in an inexplicable semi-medieval format. The characters, who seem to have been tamed for elementary school historical dramas, are too flashy. Their conversations are functional and action-oriented. There is little certainty that this could even be true in their minds. All the vendors in the movie are seen only for their features and functions, and do not contain any personality.
Some potentially interesting details are distorted. Think of the Firebender’s giant iron wire. They show potential as steampunk, but have never been petted for their intricacies. Consider the detail Miyazaki put into Howl’s Moving Castle. Trying to import Nickelodeon clips from the original sampler.
