While celebrating the announcement of Yu Dao’s new coalition government, Aang’s previous “four incarnations ago” incarnation is visited by the spirit of Yangchen. She is clearly in distress, but Aang is unable to heed her warning. He later realizes that he has been called to celebrate the Yangchen Festival, one of the highest holidays in the Air Nomad calendar, which is “not celebrated much”.
Gathering Katara, Sakka, her metal-binding friend Toph Befong, and the three Air Acolytes, Ang Apa (her fluffy mode of transportation) flies “to a peak above the sea” where the traditional festival begins. As the motley crew parades the monastery, what you see, smell and feel is not “holy ground”:
Aang was coming to understand his silent prayer, what Yangchen was trying to say. Maintaining the new peace here would be a challenge.

The Rift Part II is a brilliant piece of writing by Jean Yuen Lang Parts of his ecological treatise seemed a bit too obvious in Part One, forgivable as it was just the setup. While the presence of a dangerous refinery in an ancient sanctuary seemed to be a key element of the plot, Yang also worked on the idea that certain traditions may no longer be relevant in terms of current needs, always through the disaffected. Tough . An absolute curveball is thrown at the end by Yang while reinforcing Toph’s attitude earlier in the story.
What’s surprising about part two is that Yang has a place for the avatar Yangchen from a hundred years ago, which seemed to be a method to bring Aang and his party to Purgatory. We learn of his encounter with a spirit early in his incarnational career, and it has a direct bearing on the events of the day.
The combination of Nako Nawano Kawano and Chifuyu Sasaki to Gurihiro’s art would again require a curmudgeon of gigantic proportions, providing page after page of vivid caricature and solid personality definition. One of the great strengths of Yang’s plots for the series is how they define the regular cast, and it’s hard to imagine him representing this with a more precise lightness of touch than Gurihiro. They also change the mood nicely, and if something different is needed, like a return to an old myth

As he has done before, Yang brings all the elements of his plot together and creates a beautiful cliffhanger that takes us into part three. Alternatively, just buy Rift as a complete hardcover edition
