The official Avatar: The Last Airbender YouTube channel announced Friday that a new Avatar “series” is on the way, but the passive reveal didn’t offer any details on the scope of the show. The news comes as part of the announcement of the channel’s Earth Day weekend celebrations, which will run for three days from April 22.

The Earth Day event will include original videos, live streams from each of the three days, and “a new original series exclusive to this channel,” according to an announcement quickly spotted by fan site Avatar News.
How To Stream ‘avatar: The Last Airbender’ And ‘the Legend Of Korra’
The only problem is that there is no telling which series it will be. It seems unlikely that this will be an entirely new entry in the Avatar universe, but it would also be a bit odd for the announcement to say “series” in reference to a franchise known for its sprawling narrative.
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s use of martial arts went deeper than action scenes. Korra is a more important Avatar than Aang
Any new Avatar content destined for the YouTube channel will not appear until the last day of the weekend celebration. Earth Day celebrations will begin on Thursday, April 22 and will last for three days. The new series will be broadcast live on Saturday, April 24, and will be permanently available on the channel after the premiere, says a comment on the announcement on the channel.
Regardless of what the new series is, we know for sure that Nickelodeon isn’t done with Avatar yet. In February, the company announced the creation of Avatar Studios, a studio dedicated to the series. The studio’s first project, which began production this year, will be an animated theatrical film based on the Avatar universe.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Will Always Feel Relevant
Reached out to Nickelodeon for clarification, saying he expects a trailer for the new series and an official announcement from the company on Monday, April 19.
An update on the YouTube page explains that the series is “a new original fan-driven discussion series” and not a new animated series as many fans had assumed. The 15-year-old animated show spent a record 61 days in Netflix’s top 10 — with themes that resonate with BLM, gender equality and Western imperialism
Here’s a scene in Avatar: The Last Airbender that evokes the ethereal charm and anguish of a Studio Ghibli film every time you watch it. Iroh, the former crown prince of the Imperial Fire Nation (voiced by the late Japanese-American actor Mako), now a shrunken, graying old man, sits by his son’s grave. Drowned in regret and a gilded sunset, his gruff voice slides pensively as he sings, “Leaves from the vine, Leaves from the vine, drop as slowly as fragile, tiny husks, floating in foam.”
When I was watching this recently, my gaze was fixed on my younger brother, a 27-year-old nearly 6-foot-tall man sitting next to me. We noticed the glistening tears in each other’s eyes the split second they met as we felt the loss of Iroh.
I’ve Seen Grown Men Cry’
The scene has captivated millions around the world since Nickelodeon aired the animated series 15 years ago, and has been making a comeback since appearing on Netflix in May. The series, not to be confused with James Cameron’s Avatar , debuted at No. 1 on the streaming service when it came out in May and stayed in the top 10 for a record 61 days.
Avatar takes place in a world of four nations – water, earth, fire and air – each of which is home to people who can “bend” or control the elements with martial arts. Only one person, the Avatar—whose spirit reincarnates after their death and is born to their parents in the next nation in the “Avatar Cycle”—can master all four elements to maintain the balance between nations.
Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Brian Konecko, the show follows the adventures of the lively and tireless Aang, the 12-year-old Avatar, and the last aerial bomb. Resurrected after 100 years frozen in ice, he discovers that his people have fallen victim to genocide by the Fire Nation.
With the Black Lives Matter movement noting the ripples still felt by slavery and colonialism, Avatar’s political tone speaks strongly to a reckoning with the institutional racism unleashed by the death of George Floyd.
A Full Timeline Of The ‘avatar: The Last Airbender’ Universe
Ali A. Olomi, assistant professor of history of the Middle East, Islam, and the Global South at Penn State University, uses the series to show students the impact of genocide, colonialism, imperialism, intergenerational trauma, radicalization, stalking, and parental violence.
“One of the things we see in the Fire Nation is the ideological justification for what they do,” Olomi says. “We are a magnificent civilization. We have wealth, we have wealth, we have technological progress; we have to share it with the rest of the world. This is almost literal European colonization.”
The fantasy genre has been criticized as racially homogenous, but “Avatar is not a Western, non-white fantasy,” says Olomi. “The influence of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones is very Eurocentric. Now we have a series that phenomenally demonstrates that you can move the map, go somewhere else, and tell rich, beautiful, diverse stories without falling into Eurocentric tropes.” Indeed, the nations of water, earth, fire, and air reflect characteristics of Inuit, Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan cultures.
This was lost in director M. Night Shyamalan’s terrible 2010 film adaptation, which cast most of the main characters, including Aang, as white. Another attempt to create an action version, this time from Netflix, worried fans: last month, the creators announced that they were no longer participating in the project.
Mysterious New Avatar: The Last Airbender ‘series’ Coming To Youtube
It wasn’t just the series’ racial politics that applauded; he was also known for his subtle female characters. Toph Beifong, a stubborn and witty prodigy who was originally supposed to be a muscular man, teaches Aang how to master earthbending. Stifled by her family’s overprotectiveness because she is blind, Toph lives the life of a sheltered noblewoman and reveals her unbridled love of fighting in the ring while secretly working as a wrestler known as the Blind Bandit. When the show’s creators changed Toph’s gender, they cast Jill Murphy as Mikaela. She was only 11 years old.
“People see me and think I’m weak. They want to take care of me. But I can take care of myself, Murphy says, reciting Toph’s famous line. “Toffa has this need: ‘I’m awesome!’ I’m okay! Don’t come near me! I can do anything!” but in reality it can have both sides. She can be independent and vulnerable.”
Because of Toph’s blindness, the Avatar writers were praised for portraying disability not as something to be pitied, but as a source of strength. “Fans have come up to me and said, ‘I’ve never had a character that’s blind, that I can relate to, that’s constantly making jokes, that’s happy with who they are,'” says Murphy. “Too often you see how disabled people make fun of themselves. Toph does the opposite. It teaches us that what we see as a weakness, you let it be if you don’t let other people define it for you.”
These aspects have helped Avatar create a massive online world of Reddit and Twitter streams, where fans discuss which musical instruments were used in certain episodes, hypothetical romantic pairings, cosplayers dressing up as characters from the series, and fan art depicting Aang like a skateboarder.

While Aang is the main character, the series also centers on the journey of the rabid antagonist Zuko (voiced by Dante Basco, who rose to fame as Rufio in Steven Spielberg’s Hook). Banished by his father, he must restore his honor by killing the Avatar. But Zuko undergoes a stunning metamorphosis as he works his way through generational trauma and the Imperial legacy he inherited under the leadership of his uncle Iroh, another character beloved by fans of the series.
When Mako died of esophageal cancer during the second series in 2006, actor Greg Baldwin intervened. He had high expectations to live up to. “I knew from the beginning I wasn’t Mako,” says Baldwin, who speaks from New Mexico. “Mako was nominated for an Oscar, a Tony; he opened the first American Asian theater in the United States.’
So how did the self-proclaimed “old white guy from Texas” end up in the mantle of Iroh, despite never having met his predecessor? Baldwin was charmed by a serendipitous birthday present from 1977—the soundtrack of the musical Pacific Overture, starring Mak as the Tony-nominated reciter.
