Avengers Age Of Ultron Statue – In December 2014, Marvel Studios invited our Perception team to present ideas for Man on End and the main title for Avengers: Age of Ultron. We design a wide range of concepts. In the end, Marvel Studios chose a direction that featured a larger-than-life monument that paid tribute to Earth’s greatest heroes.
As with all of our design explorations, our team likes to create a variety of frames that span multiple styles while staying true to the initial mission. For this film, the short synopsis was eliminated, allowing us to expand our Marvel knowledge and explore a wide range of creative solutions. Some of these guidelines are given below.
Avengers Age Of Ultron Statue
Inspired by Ultron’s ability to animate and control entire armies of robots at once, this guide uses swarms to create and display images and character-specific objects for each title card.

For generations, Marvel fans have loved the incredible renderings of power and pure energy that have graced the comics of their favorite heroes, and this direction draws inspiration from the classic panels.
Bold icon encapsulates characters, locations and plot points in simple and clever forms, while rich environments refer to each symbol as moody, suggesting endless layers of iconic moments.
Inspired by iconic war memorials and classic statues, this tutorial includes creating a complete Avengers statue that unleashes their most epic faces inside the war memorial.
With each project, it is incredibly important for our team to gather as much inspiration and reference as possible. We were inspired by the 9/11 photos of the first responders and the Iwo Jima statue. Fortunately, we were able to make several trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to get a first-hand look at some of the world’s best sculptures.

Nothing is more useful for the initial design phase than sketching ideas. This allowed our team to work quickly to create poses for each character to get a better sense of how they would work together before refining in CG.
We were provided with models from Marvel Studios and went through several stages to get them ready for production. The models were first blurred so that they could be quickly presented. They were then exported to Zabrish where they became a solid piece as if they were made of marble. This means assembling and refining hundreds of pieces of geometry to function as a solid object. Our artists then added details to the model, as well as new details that were not in the original model. This includes hair, beards and other details created from displacement maps.
Once the team’s poses were dialed in, our artist built the life-size monument to hand over to the camera choreography.
Since the monument was first built, the animation process was one of the discoveries, the most interesting camera movements possible. Over 200 camera movements were created and cut down to just 27 frames in the animation. These images were designed to tell the story completely and leave room for the title.

Marvel Studios’ prime directive was: “If the first Avengers film can be described as ‘Sunrise,’ the sequel can be described as ‘Night is Falling.’ Combine with several dark tones.
After several rounds of exploration, Marvel Studios wanted the genre to be a direct sequel to the first film. While the first type of film moves towards the camera, here the movement continues by moving away from the camera. They also chose to take “Age of Ultron” beyond the “Avengers” genre. After combining these two main ideas, we used the marble texture for “Avengers” to mimic what was done for the main titles and the robot material for “Age of A vibranium texture for “Ultron”.
