On Thursday, a large sign reading “Store Closed” was hung in the window of a department store on Pearce Street, next to signs offering 30 to 50 percent off sales.

Retail store owner Bealls filed for bankruptcy last month, and it was unclear how the Carlsbad Mall store would be affected.
Last year, the store announced it would be converted to Gordmans, but after Stage Stores Inc. filed for bankruptcy in May, those plans may have been scrapped.
An employee of the Carlsbad store said the store has reopened after being closed in March by the state of New Mexico, which ordered the temporary closure of all retail stores in the state to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Miszlai said she knew Bealls because of the quality of the goods she had bought clothes and other items from for her family over the decades.

She was worried that she would have to travel over an hour north to Roswell to do similar shopping now that Bealls was apparently closing.
“This is my store. I love this store,” Miszlai said. “I’m very disappointed. I don’t know where I’m going. I’ll be very happy when it finally closes. We need a cool store that has everything.”
The store and hundreds across the country were reopened by Stage Stores after the retailer closed in New Mexico in March, the news release said, to liquidate its assets.
Houston-based Stage Stores, which owns and operates Bealls along with other department store chains such as Goody’s and Palais Royale, said about 557 stores reopened between May 15 and 67 through May 28.

The remaining stores will likely open by June 4, the announcement said, as the company sells remaining inventory and liquidates assets.
Stage Stores first acquired Gordmans in 2017 and in 2019 announced the then planned conversion of around 700 department stores to Gordmans by mid-2020.
Jeff Campbell, director of marketing and business development for the Carlsbad Department of Development, said it is unknown if plans to rebrand Carlsbad Bealls as Gordmans are still underway or if the store will close entirely.
Michael Glazer, president of Stage Stores, said the bankruptcy and the company’s financial problems in a market already threatened by online shopping were exacerbated by the pandemic, with stores nationwide closed for months as COVID-19 spread in United States.

“This is a very difficult announcement and it was a decision we only made after exhausting all possible alternatives. In recent months, we have taken important steps to try to strengthen our financial position and find an independent path to growth,” Glazer said.
“However, the increasingly demanding market environment has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced us to temporarily close all stores and lay off the vast majority of our associates. Under these conditions, we have not been able to obtain the necessary financing and we have no choice but to take these actions”.
In its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing March 10, Stage Stores reported assets of about $1.71 billion and liabilities of about $1.01 billion.
In the process of filing for bankruptcy and “liquidation” operations, Stage Stores also sought offers to sell the company or any of its assets.
