Best Learn To Read Books – When I was a kid, I was a huge bookworm like everyone else in my family! My mother used to read to me for more than an hour every day. And I couldn’t wait until I learned to read books. I remember how excited I was when I was able to read my first chapter! So I thought everyone would love to read.
As a teacher, I quickly realized that this was not the case. For many of my students, learning how to read books was frustrating. I often had to step back and cultivate love before the words, rhymes, poems and songs were ready. Because the journey to becoming a reader begins earlier in life than most of us realize.

As children learn to read, an important literacy indicator is what educators call phonological awareness. Among the seven skills that come under this rubric is rhyming.

Play games that help your child learn to hear the sounds in words and learn to manipulate them. Silly songs like “Apples and Bananas” are very effective in helping children work on the vowel sounds in words.
In my seven years of teaching struggling readers, I have discovered that mastering phonological awareness skills is essential to becoming a fluent reader! So make sure you spend enough time practicing these skills. As you play word games, sing and rhyme, you’ll want to read together every day. When you read to your child, encourage him to tell the story in his own words using pictures. Before your child sounds out the words, you can have them read with you.
When reading familiar books together, have your children say the words they know. I’m sure you have at least a few books that your kids ask you to read again and again. “The Little Blue Truck” was a favorite in our house. We read it hundreds of times and both my kids loved saying the animal sounds as we pointed out the words.
Rebus readers fit perfectly with this concept of reading with parents. If you’re not familiar with these, check out “Pig Out” from the All Aboard Picture Readers series or “We Love Our School” by Judy Sierra. Tips for rebus readers include words and pictures, making books great stepping stones on the way to learning to read. Your child will be able to read with you by naming the pictures, which will help them understand that the words we say are connected to the “symbols” in the book.

Research tells us that in addition to reading with our children, clear and distinct phonics and word studies can help them learn to read. You want to enter the letter sounds at the same time as the alphabet. I love learning sounds and letters in a fun way and engaging in ABC games and activities.
If you have a busy toddler or preschooler, you might enjoy Leapfrog’s Tad’s Fridge Phonics as much as I do. It keeps my kids entertained long enough to make dinner and practice letters and sounds while they play. Definitely a win-win all around.
I like to include all the senses in children’s learning whenever possible. The ABC Look, Listen, Do book series does a wonderful job with this! This multi-sensory approach to learning letter sounds and blending first words is a complete game changer for preschoolers! This will make learning how to read fun and engaging for your beginning readers.
As you can see, there is a lot going on before your child is ready to read books. When playing games, singing, rhyming and reading together, remember to pay attention to your child, wait for their curiosity and let them lead. Your child will show you when they are ready to take the next step.

When my own children were learning to read books, I chose materials that followed systematic phonics and only included a small selection of sight words within the text. Many so-called “phonics readers” do not follow this concept properly. So my advice is to be selective with the books you use when your child starts reading.
My son and I enjoyed working together on Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. This book presents each lesson well and is very simple to follow. Your child will learn to read books as you complete the lessons day by day. This is one of my favorite books to teach reading! A disadvantage is that the method seems repetitive and not very attractive. Instead of skipping parts of the book, take breaks and swap them with other audio readers before moving on.
Both of my children loved the Bob series of books. We have all the sets and are studying them along with the 100 easy lessons book. It also includes a Learn to Read activity book with Bob’s Book Set. The first twelve books in this series focus on letter sounds and “I read the whole book!”. Consistent tones and slightly longer stories ensure your child masters basic phonics with this reading foundation. All series include a companion book. Be sure to use it to guide you and your baby!
Another easy phonics series for beginners is the Simple Phonics books which allow the child to gain confidence at their own pace. If your child struggles to connect with the simple illustrations and look of the BOB books, this series is another great option for you. The first set of five books uses simple phonetic words consisting of consonants – vowels – consonants and minimal sight words, with no punctuation and clearly related to spiritual imagery. Follow this with Set 2 which keeps the stories the same but introduces punctuation and more complex words.

If you only work on writing and reading, you risk developing poor language reading habits. In countries where the school system emphasizes the teaching of writing, students may have a strong accent. I talked about this issue in a previous post about the importance of taking risks to improve speaking.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read. Instead, it’s an effective and fun way to make better progress. Improving your English is not difficult when you find good books to read to learn English vocabulary and grammar in a fun and effective way. A tried and true method is to choose a book that you have already read in your native language. Another important thing is to choose a book suitable for your level (not too hard, not too easy).
The Harry Potter series has helped millions of people learn English. An advantage of Harry Potter is that the level of writing becomes progressively more difficult for advanced English learners. Author J.K. Rowling clearly had a habit of perfecting her style with each additional book, so the progression was perfect. Once you start, you won’t be able to stop. You will find a good amount of specialized vocabulary related to witchcraft and sorcery. Keep a dictionary handy in the beginning and you will know the words by the end.
