British Flag In The Revolutionary War – The British red pennant flag was popular in the American colonies in the 1700s. It was adopted by the British Royal Navy in 1625 and used by British merchant ships from 1650.

In 1776, George Washington and the Continental Army laid siege to Boston. General Washington had the British red flag raised in Cambridge, but white cloth was added to the red and white to form the white stripes. This was before the declaration of American independence the following July. The opinion of the colonists was still loyal to the king, while openly protesting against the harsh treatment of the British Parliament in America.

The red flag of Great Britain was modified by the American colonies to become known as the continental colors and later became the flag of the Grand Union. It was used for some time (the Stars and Stripes flag was not officially adopted until 1777).
British soldiers fought under the British red flag during the American Revolution. This is the flag used by British General Cornwallis when he surrendered in 1781.
Note: Red flags are informally called “red dust”. There is no agreement on how the expression originated. One theory is that red flags are raised and left until they become dirty and cracked, making them look more like dust than flags. Another thing is that on British ships the old flag is often used as a rag before being discarded.

Hoist Up The Flag: The British Red Ensign
Kustis, Robert E. Lee’s father-in-law, kept the flag and other relics of his stepfather at his home in Arlington, Virginia. Kustis called the war flag “Alpha and Omega”. One, the King’s Color of the British Seventh Regiment of Foot, was captured at Chambly, Canada, in October 1775, and was the first enemy flag captured by the United States. The other, the flag of a German battalion in British service, was surrendered in October 1781 at Yorktown, Virginia, a victory for the American climate.
In 1858, for the ultimate preservation of this relic, Custis transferred it to the War Department (now the Department of Defense). An act of Congress created a war trophy vault before the flags were brought to West Point, and they remain here as two of the most important awards in national history. Although displayed for many years at previous West Point Museum locations, they have only been on display once before in Olmsted Hall, in the 2004 Bicentennial Exhibition to commemorate the opening of the West Point Museum to the public in 1854.
In order to better protect and preserve the “Alpha and Omega”, it will only be on display for two years before returning to “rest” until the next exhibition. All are invited to view this important relic before the exhibition closes in 2017. The Flag Museum’s gallery also features American Revolution artwork from the West Point Museum’s extensive and valuable art collection.
The West Point Museum is open free of charge seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.
