Call Of Cthulhu Dungeons And Dragons – When my 3 players couldn’t make it to our weekly D&D 5e game, I decided to try an RPG I’ve heard a lot about but never had a chance to try. With my favorite D&D monsters, this seemed like an obvious choice. The complication was that we only had time for one shot because we were going to play D&D later in the week and neither of us knew the rules.
So what’s this article about if I’m not going to review Call of Cthulhu or fully explain it? What I have done and prepared is to say that even if you or your players have never heard of it, give it a try.

Important: I know the game has many versions (eg Trails of Cthulhu) and editions (the one I played was the 7th). I’ve only played Call of Cthulhu, I’m in love with it for the reasons I have now, and I’m open to playing the others in the future.

Call of Cthulhu is a thriller/horror tabletop RPG that you can play with just some paper and d100s. One player takes on the role of keeper (equivalent to D&D’s DM), while the others play differently.”

. These players can lose their character by reducing their health or sanity to 0, the latter of which will drive your character insane. Your character can fail the tasks performed by scoring fewer points on d100 than you achieve in a given ability.
The stories to be played and the theme of the game are H.P. based on his books. Lovecraft. They aren’t required reading to play this game, but they go a long way in educating the protagonist (in this case, the players) about a situation they need to investigate; In the process, learning about strange eldritch discoveries will twist their minds into madness.

Players play as normal people. Normal humans are weak compared to eldritch creatures. The average Call of Cthulhu character has the same hit points as a 1st level character in D&D and loses the same amount of hit points as normal hits in D&D. In other words, don’t engage in combat unless there’s no other way (or if it makes sense for roleplaying).
In the same way that you can play D&D 5e with the starter set (or less), you can play this TTRPG without the full rules (I haven’t bought it yet, but I will soon). There’s actually a short guide you can buy that offers the right amount of game rules, as well as a short adventure you can play as a one-off to introduce new players. . The adventure in the quick guide is pretty self-explanatory, and you’ll find yourself lost in destiny!
My players partially understood the game, which would encourage them to play more in the future. This will probably make them want to read at least one piece of the legal system next time. For this first playthrough, roll dice while telling them to make a skill or sanity check and briefly explain the combat mechanics. Not much else is needed.

I ran the adventure that came with the quick guide and had fun with my players. They used some pre-made character sheets I found online and went to play and explained the rules as I saw fit. I will tell you what I love most about this adventure and the game, so there may be very mild spoilers if you use the scenario in this guide.
My players chose less relevant professions. That’s all you need to know (call us
), and acted as some kind of assistant. I decided to give it to whoever wields the most guns for fun, and the rest rely on their fists. They are tasked with investigating some strange activities for a friend.
After a long search, which took about 2.5-3 hours, the players led the clues to a haunted house. They dug up a lot of clues and theorized about how the plot would unfold. I really enjoyed the way they discussed them and as they said they connect the dots. The leaflets (easily found on the internet) helped a lot in creating immersion!
My Experience With Call Of Cthulhu (why You Should Try It!)
Players jump to random conclusions that lead nowhere. However, since there was enough space for the story, it was easy to slightly tweak what some NPCs said to get them back on track. Reminding them of our limited time, they prevented them from going off the rails once.
Haunted House completely changed the style of the game, in the same way that D&D changes when you initiate or go from town to dungeon. Having very few hit points goes a long way in making your actions noticeable and giving you an awesome feel. Players knock on the entrance, and by the time they enter a room and come out, it’s back to normal. A water pipe broke while passing through a passage, there was a knock on a door when I entered a room, thunder in the distance… I was afraid of them and more, but nothing compared to the last scene:
The seekers went through a gruesome final fight to the death. Joe kept punching the monster left and right, the others taking a step back after their attacks failed (even the guy with the gun, who in this situation was the only one who knew how to use it properly: Mike). One player ran for his life and successfully made it out of the house without taking any serious hits, and Mike tried to do the same. That’s when the monster seduced Mike. The only player who chose to stick with Joe dealt the final blow to the monster. The success did not last long. Mike pulls out his gun and blows the player’s brains out (instant kill). This means that Joe and Mike fight to the death with Joe crying as he beat his best friend.
Mike died, one player ran and was never heard from again, and the other had a bullet in his brain. Joe’s player ends the game by describing how his character was found guilty of a crime and sent straight to an asylum. I don’t think this game could have ended any better. I love my players.

The game wouldn’t be nearly as good without background music and sound effects. some
Eerie and suspenseful music plays in the background during the investigation and some rain sounds in the background leading up to the finale.
Sound effects like thunder on my computer at the press of a button helped a lot when I wanted to scare them. Sites like Tabletop Audio are great for this sort of thing (especially their soundbars). No horror movie is scary without scary or terrifying music or sound effects, so make sure to add some to your game.
My friends and I absolutely loved our first experience with this game, and I’d like to invite you to do the same. I know a lot of people stick to D&D or other similar TTRPGs without trying others. Next time a player cancels a practice, take my word for it and do something else. Tell me how it went!
