TRAVIS IS THE BEST! I wanted to get a Persian poem from 1258 tattooed. So a few weeks ago I looked around for a tattoo artist who would be able to do this. Tattooing is not necessarily a complicated work of art, however, it requires someone with a steady hand who can handle the difficulties of tattooing in an unfamiliar, complicated language. Also, the image of the poem I’m using as a piece is from a handwritten manuscript from a hundred years ago. I visited the top 10 tattoo shops on Yelp. A couple of places looked at the play, said they could do it, and asked if I’d like to make an appointment. They didn’t really realize that it was a difficult piece. Other places recognized the difficulty of the piece and convinced me of a particular artist. I had a mixed reaction. Dandyland’s Travis was different. He met with me, told me it was doable but realized it would be a piece that would require different skills than tattoo artwork. He said he had to enlarge the image to make the words big enough because the smaller words would merge together over time. He was also the only artist who really took an interest in tattooing. He seemed genuinely intent on making me happy with whatever I wanted. After looking for an artist, I settled on him. He spent a lot of time Photoshopping the piece so it was big enough to look good in 30 years, also cleaning up the lines and shifting the letters so everything was centered. Mind you, he has. all the editing in a language he doesn’t know. On the day of the tattoo I went in and he showed me the template. He was very patient and helpful as we edited the piece in Photoshop to get it how I wanted it to look good on my body. We went through several versions to find the perfect fit where I wanted it on my body. He was patient, calm and helpful throughout the process. Then came the tattoo. Even though this wasn’t my first tattoo (I have many), he still guided me through the process and gave me some rules (if you need to move or adjust something, tell me first so nothing gets mixed up, etc.). With a slow and steady hand he worked the letters of the Persian language. The finished product looks fantastic! It looks like he wrote it by hand. As for the store itself, I would recommend Dandyland. All tattoo artists are real artists. There is no “flash” (to pick your chosen tattoos). All tattoos made here are individual works of art. I’m so glad I chose Travis at Dandyland. I will go back to him for any future tattoos. I have 7 tattoos and this one is my happiest.
