An examination of various international posters reveals that the film has at least four different typographical identities.
The Day Of The Dead Movie Poster 27×40 In
The iconic US poster shows the title from a skewed perspective. Sans serif capitals (in red or green) can be letterforms and not derived from a font. Only the letter “D” has a stencil-like bridge. The font used for the tagline (“When there’s not much room in hell, the dead walk the earth”) is a grotesque ad. The tertiary text on the left is in one of Filmotype’s “G-series” styles, see Giant.
Some French, Spanish and German posters have a very different but non-typographic logo, with hand-drawn caps on the curve, dripping with blood, shaded and sometimes additionally outlined in toxic yellow (not shown here). In the German version, the “Z” gets a cross (according to local calligraphy and signage preference). This splashy approach comes very close to the stereotype associated with the zombie genre today.
Tom Sandrell’s UK poster has the dramatic perspective effect of the US version, but uses it for a recognizable typeface: here’s Paul Renner’s Futura Block pointing to a bleak future. The secondary letterform is the square British ad.
A fourth illustration of what zombie typography looks like can be found on various European posters. A set of rough blocky caps – deformed with concave lefts and convex rights – designed by Meyer “Dave” Davison and printed by Photo-Lettering, Inc. Published as Davison Psych in C by. 1968. It was soon adopted under the name Mechanorma
