Kevin and Sandra Kercher, owners and operators of Victorville’s new flea market, spent their opening day Thursday greeting customers, giving tours and making donations to a number of local nonprofits.
The Kerchers presented $500 checks to two Victorville-based organizations – High Desert Homeless Services and the Victor Valley Community Service Council’s Senior Assistance Program.
“One of the best things about store ownership is our ability to give back and support our local community,” said Kevin Kercher, whose store is located in Hi-Desert Plaza on the northwest corner of Hesperia and Bear Valley roads.
Victorville Mayor Debra Jones helped the Kerchers celebrate opening day at the 16,130-square-foot store, which boasts savings of 40-70% on popular brands.

Jones was joined by representatives from the offices of 33rd District Assemblyman Thurston “Smitty” Smith, 1st District San Bernardino Supervisor Paul Cook, 8th District Representative. Jay Obernolte and State Sen. Scott Wilk.
Shoppers walked under an arch of yellow and red balloons during the opening before entering the store to purchase fresh produce, meats, deli items, dairy products, beer, wine and natural and organic products.
Gloria LaBouef, of Hesperia, browsed the store’s produce section and told the Daily Press she plans to add the grocery store to her list of favorite local supermarkets.
“We shopped at the Grocery Outlet down the hill. “I love it, but my 14-year-old daughter Bailey likes it more,” LaBeouf said. “She gets really excited when we go shopping down the hill, and she can’t wait to come to this one.”

Every few minutes in the store, employees cheered as an employee announced over the PA system that a customer had just saved a total of $100 on their purchase compared to what they would have paid at other stores.
Customer savings at Grocery Outlet are achieved through a sourcing model of excess inventory and overstock products directly from thousands of supplier partners, which includes changing the product range with “VOV!” prices that encourage “treasure hunting” shopping, according to Supermarket News.
A third-generation, family-owned business founded in 1946, Groceri Outlet executives said the opening of the Victorville store has created 30 new jobs in the Victor Valley.
Headquartered in Emeryville, California, Grocery Outlet has more than 400 locations throughout the Golden State, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington. The stores are owned by independent operators based in the communities they serve.
Grocery Outlet Store On East Shore Is Closing
After suspending online shopping, Groceri Outlet executives began exploring options for e-commerce partners, Supermarket News reported.
Discussions are underway with potential third-party online grocers, and Grocery Outlet expects to pilot one or more solutions within a few months, CEO Eric Lindberg said earlier this month when reporting fiscal 2021 second-quarter results.
“We strongly believe that our stores represent the most important driver of growth, but we are also exploring complementary ways to reach new customers and deliver value,” Lindberg said in a closed conference call on Tuesday.
Lindberg said the increased demand for grocery e-commerce now provides an exciting opportunity for the company to expand its industry-leading value and treasure hunting experience.
Grocery Outlet To Close Jan. 15
“We are excited to begin testing different electronic approaches to determine what works best with our unique model,” Lindberg said.
To ensure families in need have access to high-quality meals, Grocery Outlet raised more than $2.8 million – the equivalent of approximately 1.4 million meals – during its 11th annual Independence from Hunger Food Drive.
Progressive Grocer reported that from June 23 to July 31, more than 400 grocery store locations fundraised and collected monetary donations from customers, employees and independent operators to give back to local food agencies to help address food insecurity in their communities.
The Hunger Campaign has raised more than $14 million in total donations nationwide since its launch in 2011.

After studying engineering at Morgan State University, Donta Rose went to work designing stores for Grocery Outlet, a California discount franchise that was rapidly expanding into the Philadelphia area.
Grocery Outlet Kicks Off Ipo
He saw a list of future stores and noticed that one would open at 21st Street and Ridge Avenue in the Sharpswood section of North Philadelphia.
“That’s where we come in,” said Rose, 28, whose mother, Melanie, grew up on Woodstock Street. “I know the neighborhood.” I know how unique this neighborhood is because if you go over four blocks you are on Temple’s campus and if you go down five blocks you are in Brewerytown. It became very important to me to be in the community that we know.”
Rose scraped together his savings and got what he called a “nice, strong loan” for the purchase. On July 26, he helped cut the ribbon on a $5 million Grocery Outlet store, one of the highlights of the neighborhood’s revitalization. The store has a parking garage, but will be a boon for residents who have to walk or rely on drives of more than a mile to get groceries, past corner stores and produce vendors.
Groceri Outlet is a full-line store with meat, dairy, frozen foods and produce. The groceries are all well-known brands. But the selection can be random as in-store shoppers deal with overstock and manufacturer inventory. (You might see Cheerios in one size, for example, but not other varieties.)

Rose said the fresh food, which is delivered four days a week, “is the most important thing for this area. As a kid, there were never any stores around where you could buy fresh produce.”
The grocer, which has more than 400 stores nationwide, is providing support. Rose is counting on the help of her extended network of family and friends, including her sister Toni and friend Nafis Muhammad, to run the store, which employs many staff in the neighborhood of 30 people.
“While we want to be a successful business, we also want to be connected to the community,” said Melanie Rose, mother of Donta Rose, a legal supervisor at American Water Works in South Jersey. “You know what’s going on in Philly. You know how there’s so much crime and so much violence and so many people fighting each other instead of building each other up. That’s why we’re here – not to say, ‘We have a store,’ but we want the community to know we’re from here.”
The Philadelphia Housing Authority, with the support of federal money, has made a huge effort to revitalize the adjacent Sharswood and Bloomberg neighborhoods. First, the PHA took control of 1,300 lots between 19th and 27th Streets, from Girard to Cecil B Avenue. Moore, to build hundreds of subsidized homes for Philadelphia’s poorest residents.

In addition to the grocery store, the development will include 98 apartments, the Everest Urgent Care Center, a senior center, Santander Bank, Pagano’s Market and a new location for Barclay’s BBK, a restaurant that now operates eight blocks away. .
It’s a comprehensive plan for the neighborhood, said Leslie Smallwood-Lewis of Mosaic Development Partners, which is leading part of the development with Shift Capital. She is also a family friend of Rosa’s.
Smallwood-Levis said they initially considered a deal with Save-A-Lot, which operates a store in a Mosaic-designed facility in the city’s Fairhill neighborhood. She said they contacted Groceri Outlet because “we
