The long-awaited Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer is finally here after debuting at San Diego Comic-Con, and after years of very low expectations, I’m pleasantly surprised. The team of Paramount Pictures and Hasbro’s Entertainment One have created an action-packed heist movie with an all-star cast. And they do it by encouraging what makes D&D fun – fighting monsters together with friends at the kitchen table.
The trailer just does a great job of introducing us to our characters and setting up the stakes. The core of the party, the bard (Chris Pine) and the barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez). gather a group of adventurers, including an experienced warrior (Rege-Jean Page), a powerful witch (Justice Smith), and a shape-shifting druid (Sophia Lillis, who says she got into D&D through real podcasts like Critical Role). Then they proceed to destroy the shit.
Nonsense they destroy? Just a cavalcade of the most recognizable D&D monsters. There are a lot of dragons here, as well as crazy shifter beasts. The mimic disguised as a treasure chest bared its teeth before lashing out with its sticky tongue. At one point, Lillis’ character transforms into Owl Bear, one of the best monsters in the franchise since the first issue—and a plastic bag of “Chinese swag” that Dave Arneson or Gary Gygax picked up at the local drugstore. . store in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in the 1970s.
