Oh no Did they make another D&D movie? OH CHRIST. Is it a Syfy Channel original?! oh wait It’s actually named after an in-game artifact. Maybe this won’t be so bad after all.

For whatever reason, they keep putting out cheap straight-to-DVD Dungeons & Dragons movies, and this is their latest effort. On the other hand, this one is a little better than the first one, so if the upward trend continues as it is now, the next one could be a good movie.

But this is still a Syfy Channel Dungeons & Dragons movie, so it wouldn’t be complete without the pathetic special effects and suspenseful continuity. Of course, you can’t expect much from a fantasy achievement with a budget of $12 million, but it’s still a huge disappointment that the obligatory dragon battle is so rushed and cheap. The otherwise good opening prologue is rendered through not very animated stills, the battles are surprisingly bloodless, especially by level 15, and the villain is generally just a man with a closed mouth. It has to be said, though, that things start to get a lot better for the final act: there’s a really cool monster in the form of an undead child, followed by a surprisingly fun battle in walking armor. book cover The moral questions begin to pay off, and there is a real sense of dread and menace when Grayson manages to infiltrate the enemy’s stronghold. It’s a shame, then, that the final battle is even quicker and more infamous than the dragon battle, with Shathrax defeated with almost no fight. You can practically hear the director yelling: Cut!
