I fired up my Amazon streaming and selected Dungeons and Dragons-Wrath of the Dragon God. Why do you ask? Well, I played D&D as a teenager and well into my twenties. Unfortunately, life and responsibility got in the way and there wasn’t much time left to fight dragons, battle lichs and save the kingdom over coke cans and pizza boxes. I was feeling nostalgic about my inconvenience today so I just wanted to take a look
Could it also be how close to the D&D experience they can make a fantasy movie? Well, it’s bad, but, in terms of acting and characters, it’s great, to the point of being a cornball character. What wouldn’t make for decent dialogue in any other film works well here as it’s an accurate representation of how we talked while acting, sitting at a table, rolling D20s and eating greasy pizza. .

Let me start by saying that I didn’t have high expectations going into this movie. For one thing, there are no recognizable actors; We’re talking about the “Z” list here. Second, the film is low-budget, seriously

. CGI costs were not a priority for this film; There was no make-up either. Having said that, did I like the movie? “Like” is a strong word when it comes to this movie, but I can’t say I hate it. I’ve seen other movies in this genre that were pretty bad because they took themselves too seriously. These guys are basically playing D&D modules in front of the camera. There is no need to give details of historical accuracy here because it is all oral-medieval fiction. It’s a bunch of low-budget actors putting together a story while trying to stay true to D&D canon, which, for all their bad acting, they manage to get right.
This movie, made in 2005, was preceded by a really terrible D&D movie from 2000 (which I haven’t seen), so it’s a sequel that takes place a hundred years after the last movie. Damodar, an evil sorcerer played by Bruce Penn, is cursed to roam the land of the undead. He decides to take revenge on the inhabitants of Izmir, who are descendants of those who defeated him. He finds the orb of Faluzura, associated with the dragon god Faluzura, imprisoned beneath a mountain. He manages to heal himself from the curse and come back to life. He decides the best way to get revenge is to unleash dragons on the hapless population of Izmir and destroy them all at once (no pun intended).
Meanwhile, ex-captain of the Kingsguard and now annoying tax collector, Lord Barak, played by Mark Diamond, and his sorceress wife Melora, played by Clemency Burton-Hill, discover that Faluzur is sleeping on a mountain under their noses. Melora tries to find the orb using her magic, but Damodar manages to curse her and she slowly begins to turn undead. Barak is asked to form a group of heroes to fight the Damodar, and he chooses: the beautiful barbarian warrior Lux, played by Ellie Chidze, Dorian, the male priest of Obad-hai, played by Steven Elder, who was a female elf wizard. A human tramp named Ormaline, played by Lucy Gaskell and Nim, played by Tim Stern. Their discovery? To find the wizard Malek’s vault to retrieve his magical pool of intimidation so they can find the orb and Damodar.
So we have a typical D&D team: two fighters, a mage, a cleric, and a thief. On screen is a typical role-playing session – they fight lichs, other dragons and a group of bandits while solving puzzles. We all know the ending – they finally defeat Damodar, destroy the orb and save the people….pack your dice, see you next Sunday, who’s ordering pizza?

This movie definitely isn’t winning any awards and is hard to watch at times. The dialogue is clumsy and cheesy, but that’s not the real point here because it’s meant to be bad. D&D is about magic and monsters and stiff, supposedly “medieval” archaic speech. The acting was tolerable and even decent in places. I really enjoyed Nim’s characterization, although I didn’t like the attempt to turn the relationship between Lux and Nim into a Gimli-Legolas type relationship; It was too forced, and there was too little time to flesh it out. It was better to watch them when they didn’t like each other. Lux is every imaginable 1980s stereotype you could dream of: she’s dressed in ripped leather, smoking hot, and completely brainless. On screen, she’s mildly entertaining at best. Barack is about to be the group’s longest and most boring leader ever. I couldn’t get into his character, he wasn’t interesting or fun to watch. Ormaline was worse, she was just awful, which pissed me off because I played an elf mage in my D&D days so I was hoping to see a proper translation of this type of character on screen. She limped through scenes, she was no longer a character, she was thrown in more to show off the spectacularly bad CGI. Dorian Cleric was another completely forgettable character. Fortunately, you don’t have to suffer as much in this movie. The two best heroes were Nim and Lux. At least there was some acting with those two and moments of believable chemistry. Just because this isn’t a historical film in the traditional sense doesn’t mean you can run around in costume and growl, hoping it makes up for your lack of acting skills. It’s fantasy, but you still have to act so you can draw the audience into your make-believe world. Almost none of that happened here, and when it did, it was a flash and then gone.
If you’re a former or current D&D player looking for a walk down memory lane, this movie might be a bit of a laugh and nostalgia treat. My dog could have done better CGI and I enjoyed it even though I’ve seen children’s Christmas concerts with more acting talent. It was great to see the objects and lingo used in the game come to life on screen. I wish someone would come along and do this much better. An afternoon in sickness and nothing to do was barely bearable. There are so many past, present, and future D&D players out there, I’d love to see a director make a decent attempt at portraying a beloved past time and actually do it. That wasn’t it.
