Easy Crochet Baby Blanket (the Barclay Baby Blanket)

Our newest free crochet pattern is a super cozy chunky crochet blanket. This is a simple quilt pattern that can be made in 2 stitches. You just need to know single crochet and double crochet, that’s all!

So if you’re in the mood for something that isn’t too complicated and can be put together fairly quickly, I think you’ll love this pattern.

It is made with Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn and this yarn is great to work with. It has very good stitch definition and is really soft for so much yarn.

It’s similar to the tenth Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, only slightly thinner and this one is made from recycled polyester. So if you haven’t tried it yet, definitely do!

One thing I love about this crochet blanket is that it will look great in any space. You can put it on the sofa or use it as a bed cover. It is also very good as a cozy cover in the morning.

I personally use it in the morning when I go out on the terrace with a cup of tea and it always warms me up. I think it would also work well in the warmer months as it’s not too heavy. So I think you will get a lot of use out of it!

For this sturdy crochet blanket you will need 3 balls of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn in Sepia Rose and 1 ball of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn in Whipped Cream.

The color Sepia Rose is used for the basis of the pattern, and the color Whipped Cream is used for the production of the tools. Or you can always change the color and make part of the blanket white and the pom-poms pink.

There are also several different colors in this range of yarns (18 in total) so you can mix and match. Some of my favorite colors are Hazelwood, Night Sky and Spruce.

Here are some color combinations in Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn that I think would look great.

To make a smaller or larger version of this quilt pattern, just adjust the chain count first. You also have to take into account some, which are two.

So for smaller quilts you want to decrease the chain count and for larger quilts you want to increase the chain count.

Begin by making a total of 8 aids using Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick in Whipped Cream using the aid, hand or card method. Be careful not to cut the ends of the tails used to close the pom-poms.

When you have all the supplies ready, put on the blanket and take out the patching needle. Insert a darning needle through one end of the pom-pom tail and through the first right stitch in the corner of the blanket.

Take the end of the other pom-pom tail and tie 3 knots with the end of the tail that just passed through the right corner seam.

Once the pom pom is secured, cut off the tail end and grab a tape measure. You want to space the other 3 pom-poms evenly around the edge of the blanket (4 on each side). You want to measure 10 ½” inches between each pom pom.

Side note: you can add more or less aids to the blanket. It’s entirely up to you.

Skill level: It is important to choose a pattern that suits your skill level. Especially for a first quilt, you want something a little challenging to keep it interesting, but nothing heavy that frustrates or overwhelms you. If this is your first quilt, consider a simple pattern like hdc ribbing (as seen in the pattern below!).

Blanket Size: Another thing to consider is the size of the blanket. Blankets can be made in a variety of sizes, from small baby blankets to large bed covers. Some quilt patterns are written in only one size, while others give you a choice of sizes. A good choice for your first quilt is the size of the quilt – big enough that you enjoy using it, but not so big that it takes ages to complete.

Quilt Construction: Another thing to consider is how the quilt will be made. Quilts made in one piece are generally faster and easier than patchwork quilts made from small squares. We recommend a one-piece quilt for your first project, unless you really enjoy sewing.

Yarn Weight: The last thing to consider when choosing a pattern is the weight of yarn needed. A blanket made with a larger yarn will go faster than a pattern made with a thinner yarn. They will also be more difficult. So, for example, a chunky yarn would be a good choice for a cozy winter blanket, but not a good choice for a summer baby blanket.

Then, with the pattern in hand, you can buy the yarn. These are the basic supplies you will need to make a quilt.
