Film Begin Again Full Movie – Keira Knightley’s new romantic comedy/musical opening today in select cities (New York and Los Angeles), Start Again (previously titled Can a Song Save Your Life?), hits theaters everywhere on July 2nd.

Writer/Director John Carney’s (ONCE) latest film is a touching comedy about what happens when lost souls come together to make great music. Greta (Keira Knightley) and longtime boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who move to New York when they land a major label deal. But the trappings of her newfound fame soon seduce Dave, leaving the sad, loving Gretta all alone. His world changes for the better when disgraced producer Dan (Mark Ruffalo) stumbles upon a performance on the East Country stage and is instantly captivated by his raw talent. Out of this chance encounter emerged a breathtaking portrait of an evolving collaboration to the sounds of summer in New York. Our P&P (2005) 10th Anniversary celebration continues here… One of the many things I love about Pride and Prejudice (2005) is the catchy and quotable quotes (and dialogue). Mr. Carney pulls off a charming trick by dressing an understated romantic mood in a style that feels raw and real, so that every clip he holds feels shiny and fresh.

In “Start Again”, he tries to repeat the trick. This time the city is New York, not Dublin, and real movie stars play carefully selected musicians. Keira Knightley as Greta, British songwriter after a personal and professional crisis. A few months ago (as shown in one of the brilliant montages) she arrived with her boyfriend and one-time writing partner Dave (Adam Levine). She makes a huge record and soon succumbs to the temptations of a rock star life. Gretta crashes in the waiter’s (James Corden) bed and plans to return home.
But later, among the bare bricks and huge chairs at an open mic night in downtown, Greta meets Dan (Mark Ruffalo), the head of Music Tails. Dan lives apart from his wife (Katherine Keener) and is unable to communicate with his teenage daughter Violet (Hailee Steinfeld). His hobbies include whiskey, brown paper cigarettes, and not shaving. After hearing that Greta has changed her ways with a breakup song, Dan offers him a little-known business opportunity that he is too dishonest to accept. Instead, they chose to record the album on the streets and rooftops of Manhattan, a kind of sonic valentine for New York City, offering listeners consistent events and musical treats instead of upfront payments.
Money and desire form an uneasy context in Start Over. Lacking Gretta’s strong, utterly compelling views of authenticity and honesty, Dan is both dreamy and preoccupied, despised and respected. Taking a movie about how musicians make a living is a bit of a distraction. The bright line she wants to draw between passion and business is forever blurred by the combination of a wayward boyfriend and an established recording industry heavyweight (Yasin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def).
The same goes for films. But that doesn’t mean it’s good. Compared to “Once Upon a Time”, “Start Again” feels like a slightly depressing, over-produced breakthrough album from the new band. Much of the problem is that music that offers heart, soul, and artistic excellence ranges from mediocre to terrible. When Dan first heard Greta on his acoustic guitar, he envisioned a complete arrangement of her song, transforming it from mediocre off-key folk into an average radio hit in his mind.
