You can keep idols in your heart without making them yourself. In today’s culture, we have created our own gods. Paul warned about people who love themselves more than God. (See 2 Timothy 3:1-5.)
Some make idols out of money. The Bible says that the greedy will not inherit the kingdom of God. (See Galatians 5:19-21.)
Some make idols of their families. You have to worship your family, you have to sacrifice for your family, but the worst thing is to put your family first, because God comes first. When God comes first, your children will love more. Jesus said, “Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And whoever loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me” (Matthew 10:37).
The First And Most Broken Commandment
Some make idols of joy. You don’t have to choose between God and pleasure! At his right hand is everlasting joy (Psalm 16:11), but joy cannot come first.
If the Bible says: “Do not carve an image”, it is not against religious art. The tabernacle was a work of art, and Solomon’s temple had flowers, pomegranates, palm trees, cherubim, etc. at God’s command.
The second commandment is not against art; it is against idolatry. If art is your master, it is idolatry. When art is your servant, it becomes a service.
God says that wrong worship is injustice and sin! You don’t get to choose how you want to worship. The false worship of the father is manifested in the son, grandson, and great-grandson. (See Exodus 20:5.) Sin never hurts one person.

If you want your children, your children’s children, and your great-grandchildren to love God, God says, “Blessed is the generation of the righteous” (Psalm 111:2).

Since the 10 commandments are not numbered in the Bible, several numbering systems have developed. Most of the Protestants also accept what we said above. Catholics and Lutherans expand the First Commandment to include what we call the Second Commandment, written in Exodus 20:4-6, which says no idols. In our view, this might negate the commandment against idols.
Some Jewish sources list only verse 2 as the first commandment. We consider it only a prologue, since it does not include a command.
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me” means we must put God first in our lives. It is more important than others.
The Catholic Ten Commandments
