The book was published in the United States under the name “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, because the publishers feared that most American readers would not be familiar enough with the term “The Philosopher’s Stone”. However, this decision led to criticism from the British public who believed that it should not be changed because it is an English book.
“To Jessica, who loves stories, to Ann, who also loved them, and to those who heard it first.”
The book is dedicated to three relatives of the writer J.K. Rowling: Jessica, her eldest daughter, Anne, her late mother and Dee, her sister.
“Harry Potter has never played sports while flying on a broomstick. He’s never donned an invisibility cloak, befriended a half-giant or helped Luke a dragon. All Harry knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys: his horrible aunt and uncle and theirs. Nasty son, Dudley, Harry’s room is a tiny closet under the stairs, he hasn’t had a birthday party in ten years, and his birthday present is his uncle’s alto sax.

There he found not only friends, aerial sports and magic around every corner, but a great future that awaited him… if Harry could survive the encounter.
“Harry Potter has had no magic so far. He lives with the miserable Dursleys and their hideous son, Dudley. Harry’s room is a small closet under the stairs, and he hasn’t had a birthday party in ten years. Then a mysterious letter arrives by courier, a letter with an invitation to an amazing place Called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he finds not only friends, sports flying on broomsticks, and magic in everything from classes to meals.
Harry Potter thinks he’s a normal kid – until he’s rescued by a bug-eyed giant of a man, enrolls at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, learns to play Quidditch, and fights a deadly duel. The reason, Harry Potter is a wizard!”
Vernon and Petunia Dursley, of Number Four Privet Drive (in Little Whining, Surrey), are proud to say they are perfectly normal. They are the last people you would expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just don’t put up with such nonsense. Vernon is the manager of a drill manufacturing company called Grunnings, and Petunia keeps the house and raises their one-year-old son Dudley.
Magical Books To Read If You Like Harry Potter
Tuesday 1 November 1981 The Dursleys start the day gossiping about their neighbors while Petunia struggles with the unpleasant Dudley in his high chair. Neither of them notices a large brown owl flying past their window, but Vernon notices the tabby cat reading a map and a street sign outside their house. He forces himself to forget the cat, but when he reaches the city, he notices large groups of people wearing coats. He eavesdrops on them and hears them talking about “the Potters and their son Harry”. Vernon finds it creepy because the Potters are his in-laws, and he and Petunia wouldn’t want anyone finding out about them.
As he leaves at the end of the job, he runs into a small man in a coat, but when he tries to apologize, the man grabs him and tells him that muggles like him should celebrate today because “You-Know-Who” is defeated.
Vernon returns home to find the cat still waiting there, and it only gives him a stern look as he tries to get rid of it. The news is full of unexplained owl sightings and fireworks displays, and Vernon nervously asks Petunia if she’s heard from her sister lately. Petunia is angry, but she tells him that she hasn’t heard from her sister and that their nephew’s name is “Harry”. Vernon’s heart sank. He has trouble falling asleep that night but eventually succeeds.
After the Dursleys fell asleep, Albus Dumbledore appeared in the middle of Privet Drive and turned off the light from the street lamps with his illuminator. He greets the cat that has spent all day waiting outside as “Professor McGonagall”, and the cat transforms into a human woman. They discuss the death of James and Lily Potter at the hands of Lord Voldemort at the Potter cottage in Godrich Hollow and how their infant son, Harry Potter, miraculously survived the attack while Voldemort was supposedly dead.
Hidden Messages In The Harry Potter Books
Rubeus Hagrid arrives on a flying motorcycle and drives Harry. He hands it to Dumbledore, who leaves the sleeping baby and a letter to the Dursleys on the door of number four. The three wizards are upset to leave the orphaned baby with his relatives, but they only give themselves a moment to grieve before forcing themselves to leave. Hagrid says he will return the motorcycle to its owner, young Sirius Black; McGonagall reverts to her cat form and sneaks around the corner at the other end of the street, and Dumbledore turns on the street lamps and says goodbye to Harry before disappearing without a trace.
Harry turns over in his bundle of blankets, and his little hand closes over the letter as he falls asleep. Little does he know that he is special and famous, that he will be woken up the next morning by his aunt’s screams when Petunia opens the door to turn off the milk bottles, that he will spend the next few weeks being pushed and pinched. By his cousin Dudley, or at this very moment, people are secretly meeting around the country toasting, “To Harry Potter – The Boy Who Lived!”
“Aunt Petunia often said Dudley looked like a baby angel – Harry often said Dudley looked like a pig in a wig.”
Ten years have passed since the Dursleys woke up to find Harry Potter lying on their doorstep, and Privet Drive and the Dursleys’ home haven’t changed since that day. The only difference is the huge number of photos of Dudley Dursley throughout his life displayed on the walls. There is no sign that Harry Potter lived there, as Harry had to live in the closet under the stairs, a very cramped space with many spiders. Petunia arrives at Harry’s door one morning and wakes him up with a screeching voice. Harry tried to think about the dream he had. It was about a flying motorcycle, and he thinks he had the same dream before. Aunt Petunia tells him to make some bacon, because she wants everything to be perfect for Dudley’s 11th birthday. Harry puts on a pair of Dudley’s old clothes and walks into the kitchen, where the table is covered with Dudley’s gifts.

Harry has black hair and green eyes. His glasses are held in place with tape because Dudley has broken them so many times. The thing that most distinguishes Harry from others is the lightning-shaped scar on his forehead. He often wonders how he got it and the Dursleys told him he got it from the car accident that killed Harry’s parents. Harry doesn’t know much more about the accident because the first rule of the Dursleys is not to ask questions. Dudley walks into the kitchen and starts counting his presents, only to find 36, which he angrily remembers from less than a year ago. Aunt Petunia says they are going to buy him two new presents while they are out. Vernon tells Petunia that their neighbor Arabella Pig, a junkie, has broken her leg and can’t take care of Harry while they’re at the zoo. They can’t think of anyone else who can take care of him, so Harry has to go with them.
Dudley is allowed to take a friend to the zoo and chooses his friend Piers Folkis. Pierce arrives at the house with his mother. Half an hour later, Harry is sitting in the car with Dudley, Pierce, Vernon and Petunia. On the way a motorcycle ran over them and Vernon complains about them. Harry comments that he once had a dream about a flying motorcycle and Vernon briefly reminds him that motorcycles don’t fly. Harry thinks about all the strange things that have happened to him: he once turned his teacher’s wig blue, jumped the school chimney, and the morning after a haircut he grew all his hair back. At the zoo, Dudley and Pierce find the animals boring. Harry stayed to watch
