Camp Crystal Lake provided lots of camping fun. Jason became an undead, supernatural killing machine, and the meta-comic kept things light-hearted and made him a fan favorite.

Five years after the Muppets started, Jason seems poised to accomplish what they seem to have failed to do. Jason follows a group of teenagers on a boat to New York and ventures out of his comfort zone to face his greatest fear: late ’90s Times Square! In that case, I’m definitely cheering for Jason.

Jason makes his debut as an assassin and rises from the dead to avenge his mother. Though Jason doesn’t yet have his signature look, the film sets the pattern for the rest of the series, which he will quietly follow as Jason rages on.

Of course, this isn’t really the final season, although it was once intended to end the franchise. Instead, the character Tommy Jarvis (played here by Corey Feldman) is introduced, who becomes Jason’s greatest nemesis. Tommy’s family foolishly vacations near Camp Crystal Lake, where Jason once again weaves his way through a series of reckless victims, including essentially unsuspecting teenagers.

Does what the title promises by trying to take the franchise in a slightly new direction. Tommy Jarvis returns, now played by John Shepherd, who is living in a psychiatric facility after his traumatic encounter with Jason. The film is a murder mystery type of thing set in this teenage dorm, not Camp Crystal Lake, with a killer who mimics Jason’s style but is someone very different.

As the title suggests, Jason himself returns for the sixth film after viewers were disappointed with his exit in the previous installments. Tommy Jarvis also returns, played here by a third actor (Tom Matthews).

The franchise is characterized by a largely comedic tone inherited from writer-director Tom McLaughlin. It gives the film the feel of a retro monster movie, with an emphasis on light humor and chilling undertones of graphic violence and nudity.

Lor Park Lincoln introduces telekinetic teenager Tina Shepard. Tina’s family home is conveniently located in Crystal Lake, and after accidentally using her abilities to revive Jason, she rededicates herself to stopping him. Tina is there to balance Jason’s increasingly powerful presence, though she tries, largely to no avail, to stop him from killing the final group of expendable young victims.

Jason doesn’t like Manhattan that much, rather he takes a boat trip that arrives in Manhattan towards the end of the film. Due to budget constraints, most of the film had to be shot outside of New York City. Instead, the focus is on Jason killing various teenagers while they take a high school graduation drive from Crystal Lake to NYC. Eventually he weaves his way through a few locations in the Big Apple, but it’s nowhere near the successful heist the title suggests.
