The beautician teenagers all look like banal, plastic, wannabe refugees from a sitcom, hoping for their double humor with every line of dialogue. As they drive around town in a bright yellow Volkswagen bug, they’re harassed by lazy shopkeepers who don’t get anything, who don’t receive food stamps, thank yous, and apparently members of a local motorcycle gang. Michael Jackson’s music video for “Beat In.”
Everything looks like a quick cartoon, painted in a bunch of bright colors that we associate with the 1980s. Even our resident monster has morphed, not unlike John Rambo’s alter ego, unlike Lone Wolf.
Friday The 13th
Continuity Crazy, crazy Jason Voorhees (Richard Brooker) went from a little mutant farm boy to a flaming goon in overalls, shaved bald and looking like a gas station ex-convict.
Shot in such a way as to cash in on the short feed of Reagan-era 3D movies, there are unforgettable POV shots from the killer and other shots from the victims’ point of view, as Jason shoots straight at us, jumping through windows and over does . Move the furniture to the screen, and push someone’s head until their eyeballs pop out of their sockets and blow with air. At any point, victims of similar disasters replace lenses with playful actions, yo-yos, and moving chairs.
But easily the most surprising moment is the long, spoken sequence in which the film’s protagonist, Chris (Dana Kimmel), shares a secret with his on-again, off-again boyfriend, Rick (Paul kurta). One night after a fight with his parents resulted in an unforgivable slap in the face, he punished them by running away into a dark, dark wood. Once there, he meets a sinister, possibly brutal character (guess who?), and if this macabre power-ballad-style monologue wasn’t enough,
A rape fantasy flashback scene where our last girl crawls out of the bushes as Jason grabs her leg. The scene unfolds like a fairy tale on the therapist’s couch. Who knew people in lowest-common-denominator pulp horror would find themselves haunted by Freudian hangups?
Making The Franchise: Friday The 13th Part 3

How do you like to go to the cheesy synthesizer dance beats that open and close the movie? Or a casual conversation: “Okay, first we take off our clothes, then you come on top of me or I go on top.”
