“It’s on Netflix now, I put it on and watch it all the time,” said Wilmer Flores, a 26-year-old Mets shortstop from Venezuela. “When I get up in the morning, I turn on the TV and whatever episode is on there, I watch and I keep watching. “Basic things you can learn in the classroom,” said Flores, who along with most of the players was interviewed in Spanish. “But speaking that language comes in a club, on the street or on television.”

Gonzalez probably speaks the best English, having grown up in San Fernando, California in his youth, but still appears in movies and TV shows, including “Saved by the Bell” and “Friends,” which he watched with his uncle.

For Galvis, broadcasting in English with Spanish subtitles on Venezuelan television was a great learning tool. “You can compare what’s going on,” he said. “If they say ‘happy,’ if you see it’s happy and the subtitle says ‘feliz,’ you can learn.” “You may not learn 100 percent, but you learn to communicate.”

And if Severino didn’t understand a word of a play, he would ask his teammates or friends for help.
