The Godfather Part Iii Lacks In Clarity, Not Casting
The famous film The Godfather, an American gangster epic, released in 1972, was adapted from the best-selling novel by Marija Puza from 1969 and has been considered a masterpiece since its release. Its masterful cinematography, stunning music and unforgettable performances by actors like Marlon Brando and Al Pacino have made this multi-generational saga an enduring cultural icon.
Is set in the 1940s and takes place entirely in the world of the Corleones, a fictional New York mob family. It opens in the dark office of the family patriarch, Don Vito Corleone (aka The Godfather, played by Brando), on the wedding day of his daughter, Connie (Talia Shire). Vito’s youngest son, Michael (Pacino), who has distanced himself from the family business, comes to the ceremony with his girlfriend Kay (Diane Keaton), who is not Italian. A few months later, Vito is almost killed by gunmen sent by a rival family, and Michael saves him from another attempt while recovering in the hospital. Michael then takes revenge, killing the corrupt police captain and the man who ordered Vito’s murder, after which he flees to Sicily as a gang war breaks out. Vito’s eldest son, Sonny (James Caan), is gunned down, and the violence eventually reaches Michael when his Sicilian wife is killed in an assassination attempt. Michael returns home and marries Kay, and Vito reconciles with the feuding families. Michael follows his father as don and, after bringing prosperity to the family, begins a campaign of systematic extermination of all who have attacked the Corleones.
Director and co-writer Francis Ford Coppola shared the Oscar for the screenplay he and Puzo wrote. The film’s dialogue—especially the line “I’m going to make her an offer she can’t refuse”—has become a cliché, and scenes from the film have often been quoted in other films and TV shows. Nino Rota’s score was nominated for an Oscar, but was removed from the list after it was discovered that parts of the score were taken from the 1958 Italian film.
It made a star of Robert Duvall, who played the consigliere of the family, and revived Brando’s career. Brando, however, turned down the Oscar he received for his performance in protest of the film industry’s treatment of Native Americans.
