The best approach, in my opinion, to visiting Goodwill for the first time is to simply take it easy and take it all in. Go where there are no people and go through some trash cans. You will get a good idea of what kind of things are for sale and you will be able to see how things work.
One of the most exciting things about the Goodwill Bins is that all items are sold gross and you pay by the pound. This (usually) works in favor of the buyer.
You simply dig through the pool, find what you want, weigh your items and pay for what you have.
However, how Goodwill outlets operate as a whole is a mystery. Or, it would be more accurate to say that since each outlet is different, it is difficult to find out exactly what you will get and what you will find.

However, there are a few things I can tell you that seem to be true overall.
When supplies enter the back of the room, they are roughly arranged in large bins of similar items.
The trays are rotated every 15 minutes or so. Which means that workers will bring out 4-6 new barrels and replace parts. The split barrels have been moved to the rear. While they are in the back they can either be added or left to sit until they are brought back inside.
When I get to the trash can, I grab a water bottle (or coffee, you do), gloves and a mask, and a snack. You want to be prepared to spend time there and make the most of your trip.

Although gloves are not strictly necessary, I recommend them. This can be very rude and even dangerous. Before I started wearing gloves every time I had a few chips and a little nick from digging through random mud.
You’ll have to check the thrift stores near you (or call) to check but many don’t even have carts available for people!
The one closest to me has about 20 carts so you have to wait in line when they open to get one.
To save you from having to carry all your stuff around, I would recommend taking a large bag. I take an IKEA bag with a zipper. It is large, ultra-light, zips and has backpack straps. Even if I get a basket, I keep the bag in the basket. This allows you to slide the items you know you will buy into the bag and keep them safe from shoplifters.
