There is nothing in the backgrounds of Jess Loflin and Marie Cole that would make you think they would end up owning a grocery store in West Kensington.

Both were born far from a silver spoon. Cole, 57, in Raymond, Washington, a rural logging and fishing town, and Loflin, 42, in a small New Mexico border town.
Cole spent decades working for large chain restaurants and became increasingly burned out. Loughlin, whose eclectic background includes a career as a farrier and managing large call centers, became increasingly disillusioned. Both were willing to try something new.
When Cole answered what she thought was a job ad for the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, she discovered it was actually a call for new owner-operators. Grocery Outlet is a growing chain of convenience stores that started on the West Coast in 1946 and is expanding on the East Coast.
And with that, the partners—in business and in life—underwent months of intensive corporate training, then drove eight days across the country with their three dogs to open Philadelphia’s fifth grocery store on American Street.

“We decided it was a good location because the area needed good jobs and affordable food,” Cole said of the location. “We opened on 23.3.23. I know that day better than my wedding anniversary.”
Based in Emeryville, California, Grocery Outlet opens about 35 stores each year. Each is operated by an independent owner. The company began expanding in Pennsylvania in 2012, and the first urban store opened in Mount Airy in 2021.
A Sharswood grocery store opened last year, anchoring the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s new $52 million Ridge Avenue development, giving the North Philadelphia neighborhood its first supermarket since the 1960s and a new source of employment.
The supermarket chain’s strategy of buying excess inventory and seasonal sales from name-brand manufacturers and then selling them at a deep discount has made it one of the nation’s fastest-growing discounters, according to industry magazines.

Sisters Cheryl Lubin and Kalena Sutton packed a car full of groceries after a recent shopping spree. Lubin, who usually shopped at Walmart, said she had to support a family of five for a month. According to the USDA, a family of four can spend nearly $1,000 a month on groceries today, whereas two years ago the bill would have been about $300 less.
It was Lubin’s first time in a grocery store, but Sutton visited stores all over town. “Honestly, the deals are good, the people are nice and fun. My sister and I [work as] InstaCarters, and I can tell you that nobody is packing anymore,” said Sutton.
Anija Davis was thrilled with the savings. “I usually spend $150 and my total bill was $122,” Davis said. Davis, a regular Acme shopper, went to the market curious about the new store, which is within walking distance of her home.
Loughlin said the store also allows the couple to participate in social mission activities, including providing healthy food in a food desert and good living wage jobs. They also want to be more involved in LGBTQ events, youth employment and literacy issues. “New Mexico had the lowest level of education in the country when I was there,” Loughlin said.

At their store’s grand opening, Loflin and Cole each donated $1,000 to the Sunday Love Project, a food pantry, and Norris Square Community Alliance, a community development company.
They said they took a significant financial risk in opening the store, but they are confident that grocery is a safe business and American Street is a thriving residential area. They also make it to the ground floor of Grocery Outlet’s East Coast expansion.
Currently, the couple is passionate about art, food, people, culture, music, diversity and, most importantly, their adopted hometown. And after four moves in the 10 years they’ve been together, they predict that Philadelphia might just be where they put down their roots for good.
