More than 93 percent of the corn and soybeans grown in the United States are genetically modified in some way. Most of it ends up as animal feed, ethanol or corn syrup – and corn syrup goes into a lot of food. Cotton, sugar beet and canola are also common genetically modified crops. 8. Papaya and banana: Papaya was first genetically modified in Hawaii and was introduced to the market in 1999. Genetically modified papayas are not approved in Europe, however, 50% of papayas from Hawaii are genetically modified. Also, most bananas in the US are genetically modified.
