More than 93 percent of the corn and soybeans grown in the United States are genetically modified in some way. Most of it ends up as animal feed, ethanol or corn syrup – and corn syrup goes into a lot of food. Cotton, sugar beet and canola are also common genetically modified crops. About 60 to 70 percent of processed foods in stores contain at least some genetically modified ingredients.
Animals are a slightly different story. Worldwide, most GM crops are grown in just five countries: the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and India. In 2013, more than 12 percent of global agricultural land (175 million hectares) was covered by GM crops, although growth appears to be slowing:

8. Papaya and banana: Papaya was first genetically modified in Hawaii and was introduced to the market in 1999. Genetically modified papayas are not approved in Europe, however, 50% of papayas from Hawaii are genetically modified. Also, most bananas in the US are genetically modified.
