This heart, the only one preserved by hand, was removed from a blue whale carcass in 2014. To extract and preserve the giant marine mammal tick, 10 workers first had to remove pieces of flesh and bone. To prevent the heart from burning due to lack of blood, the researchers inserted clamps into two blood vessels and pumped the rest with plastic bottles. After draining 700 gallons of formaldehyde, the organ was frozen, the decay stopped and the heart returned to its original shape.
For the plate, the organ had to be sent to Germany. Therefore, it is wrapped in absorbent mats, in a metal container with packing nuts and installed in the plane. In the next six months, the German anatomists bathed the heart in acetone, which gradually absorbed all the water molecules. Then they were sent to the silicone polymer solution and the vacuum chamber. After three months of curing the silicone with a gas cleaning agent, the sealed heart was finally removed.
