Consider the relationship between overall inequality and how many people are in the income 50th percentile. For example, America certainly has high inequality, but middle-income Americans earn over $38K more than any other country in our overview. Germany, France and the UK also have the same total but only the top 50th percentile ($36K). Compare that to the situation in Brazil and South Africa, where the average worker earns about 7 times less than the average worker in the United States.
There are a few things to keep in mind about our maps. It contains numbers for only 14 countries. There are also large differences in inequality between countries such as the United States, where there is much to be said for comparing wealth rather than income. Finally, our map does not take into account the types of services that each government provides to its citizens. People in other countries may be guaranteed a retirement pension (like France) and health care, but most Americans do not have access to these things outside of their workplaces.
So there is a lot of inequality in the world, but is it bad for middle class workers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
