I remember learning to crochet. Many of the patterns I tried used single crochet – I think there are a few less steps? I also remember the frustration of slow crochet because I was new to it, and it took forever to get anywhere (because single crochet is such a short stitch). So I think double crochet is a great place to start, and there are so many! Also, if you can double crochet, you can easily do one and a half double crochet.

I’m not creating anything new here, but I took the time to take the photos, edit them, and put this tutorial together, so please appreciate my work. Do not pin or share any images in the tutorial – the main photo. Provide the link so others can find my page (help me and my blog with traffic). Do not copy and paste my work anywhere. Thank you!

Double crochet (abbreviated DC) is a simple crochet stitch consisting of a starting yarn, and a three-step “pulling” process. This is equivalent to the length of two single crochet stitches, which makes projects go faster, but produces fabric that is more breathable and flexible.

I also want to add that this double crochet tutorial is in US terms. What does that mean? There is also double crochet in UK terms, which is a different stitch! Usually, the standards determine which one it is – my blog is in every US term.

The right side is the front of the fabric, which may look better than the wrong side, and the wrong side is the back of the fabric. I think they are both beautiful, but after you turn your work over to start Row 3, you can see the difference in appearance from Row 1 and Row 2. Row 1 is considered the right side, and Row 2 the wrong side. . In the photo above, we have just finished working on Row 2, and we are about to work on Row 3. Do you notice the difference between the appearance of Row 1 and Row 2?

If you haven’t already, make a slip knot (photo course), then work a basic chain (photo course) of 11.

If it’s an actual pattern, you’ll see it written like this: “Chain 11” OR “Ch 11”

He might not tell you to do the slip, but you always start with one.

… Skip the first three chains on your hook, insert your hook into the fourth chain, yarn over…

…Insert the hook into the next chain. Yarn over, slip (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through two loops on hook (2 loops left on hook), yarn over, pull through two loops left on hook.

Keep working this way until the end, and it will look like this. In total, we have 9 double crochets – that’s 8 you worked + the skipping chains from the beginning.

…And complete two chains – this is called a twisted chain, and with a double crochet, it’s the same as the first double crochet in the row…

…Swing the yarn over the working yarn around to the left (instead of to the right like we did), then pull…

What we really want here is to skip chains from scratch. In rows 3 and up, you will work what we call a “spin chain”, but it looks like this.

Yarn over as usual, insert the stitch under the top two loops (as shown), then complete the last double crochet in the same way as the others.

And now you have completed two rows of double crochet! In this example, we have 9 double crochets (same as we counted at the end of Row 1). On future rows, it’s good practice to periodically check your stitch count to make sure you haven’t missed any.
