We will use some basic shapes to draw the initial outline of the sea turtle. Start with a 2B pencil and an oval for the head. It should be roughly an egg shape tilted on its side. Make the left side slightly wider than the right side. The turtle’s nose is on the right side.

Next, draw two lines coming from the head. This will be the neck of the sea turtle, which is cylindrical in shape. Keep the lines parallel. Then connect the two lines with a curved line that follows the same curve where the head meets the neck.

Now, draw a wavy line on the front of the shell on the sea turtle. Draw the first part of the curved line at the top of the neck. Then bend the line to the left and bend it down again. This long arch is above the turtle’s flipper.

Continue extending this line to the left side of the paper. Curve the line down slightly to form the bottom edge of the turtle shell.

Now, I want the top edge of the turtle’s shell to be slightly higher than its head. I drew a temporary horizontal guide to help me with placement. Then it’s just a matter of drawing a curved line from the back of the shell up and down towards the neck.

Draw another curved line from the bottom of the shell to the base of the sea turtle’s neck. It completes the basic shape of the tortoise shell and its main body. Next, we’ll add some wings.

Draw a long, curved shape with a slight curve for the front wing. Tilt it backwards. Align the tip of the fin roughly with the back of the turtle’s shell.

Then draw the front flipper on the other side of the sea turtle. It should also be curved, but it should be much shorter and wider than the first fin. Draw a line on the fin below the head to indicate where the fin bends.

Draw the outline of the hind wing with a pointed claw along the lower edge. This wing should be very short and roughly foot shaped. When you’re done, erase some loose guidelines that are no longer needed, such as the line behind the front wing and the curved lines at the base of the neck and head.

Now it’s time to draw the details of the sea turtle to make it look more realistic. We will start with the facial features of the sea turtle. Draw a sharp curved line to better define the division of the head and neck. From here, draw a line across the front of the turtle’s face to represent the mouth. Then form the nose above the line and the upper eye on the other side. Next, draw an almond eye that overlaps the upper eyelid. Draw two small holes, a line between the eyes and around the eye toward the nose.

Draw a series of scales covering the turtle’s face. These scales are shaped like triangles, squares, pentagons or hexagons. Roll the peels around the eye area. Then cover the rest of the top. Make them generally similar in size. Draw the lower nose and some light markers and scribbles for more precise scales and wrinkles on the lower jaw.

Draw wrinkles on the top of the sea turtle’s neck. Make sure the lines wrap around the curve of the neck. Draw some long creases between the base of the neck and the nape of the neck. Build on that by drawing lines for more wrinkles that extend up to the neck. End with a visible part of the underside of the shell and some loose wrinkles and scales nearby.

Begin drawing the scales on the leading edge of the sea turtle’s distal wing. These scales should be similar in size and shape to the scales on the face, but most of these scales appear as a pointed, triangular shape on the underside of the flipper. Also notice how the scales wrap around the leading edge of the wings.

Continue drawing scales along the wings. When you reach the bottom of the fin, draw a sharp claw protruding from the tip. Draw more oval or rectangular scales on the underside of the wings near the tip. Then draw some similar shapes with very light pressure on the underside of the wings.

Begin by drawing scales on the leading edge of the front long fin. Start near the top. As you work down the edge, draw one or two measurements per row. About halfway down the fin, start drawing a scale per row. Make these gauges with straight edges at the top and bottom, but tapered at the sides. Use a triangular shape for a larger scale at the tip of the fin.

Draw a line going from the tip of the fin to the center. You can use this line to divide the rest of the space into smaller scales. Draw some large scales at the top. Draw curved lines to form the top of the sea turtle’s flipper where it meets the body and curves.

Next, draw the scales on the sea turtle’s flipper. Start at the front edge. Draw scales on the side and wrap over it. Fill the rest of the surface with mostly oval shaped scales. Thinner the scales as they go further back.

Now let’s start drawing the pattern on the sea turtle shell. The various shapes that make up the design are called tortoise shell
