First Time Drawing Anime Characters Chose To Draw Smiling Midoriya
1. Start by drawing a grid of guidelines. First, draw a vertical line and a horizontal line that meet at the bottom left corner of the page. Then draw another pair of horizontal and vertical lines that meet in the middle of the paper. Finally, draw short horizontal lines at the top and three-quarters of the way down the page.
2. Delete the bottom line of the circle. Draw a wide “U” line below the circle, meeting the horizontal line at the bottom. This defines the cheeks and chin.
Use curved lines to cover the ears, which are attached to the head below the midline. From the chin, continue two curved lines to form the neck. Notice how the grid helps to place the ears
3. Next, draw anime eyes below the midline. Determine the shape of the curved rectangle, making sure that the bottom line does not attach to the sides. Enlarge and darken the top line and outer edges. Extend short, thick lines to create lashes.

Then place a small circle in each eye and draw a large circle around it. These are pupils and irises. Delete the horizontal line. Check out this drawing guide for more details on how to draw anime eyes.
4. Face details. Use curved lines to cover the curved, pointed shapes of the eyebrows, nose, and simple anime mouth. (See the anime mouth drawing tutorial.)
The nose is placed just inside the first circle, three-quarters of the way from the top. The mouth passes between the nose and the tip of the chin.
7. Use long curved lines to cover the top of the hair. Notice how the two lines meet and dip at the top of the head.

8. Erase the rest of the guidelines in your drawing, paying special attention to the top of the first circle. You have completed the basic premise of the anime.
Now that you’re familiar with this original manga figure, let’s talk about a few differences in the following anime reference figure.
You’ll notice that characters of different ages have different head shapes. In fact, the shape of the head can be a key indicator of a character’s age. How so?
Consider this example of a child’s head. Note that areas such as the chin are soft. The face is broad and round, especially in the area of the cheeks. Even round and less square eyes.

Compare that to the face of a teenager. A manga teenager’s face is longer than a child’s face, but still rounder and smaller than an adult’s face.
Even with the same hair, this last photo is clearly years older. The chin is more pointed, the face narrower and longer.
Do you think these drawings show the same character at different ages – baby, child and adult? You might be right!
Let’s compare the cute anime girl and the humble anime boy. Based on their facial expressions, we can assume that both characters are teenagers or young adults.

What differences do you notice between facial features? A man’s chin and jaw are angled and more defined than a woman’s. His face is round, almost round. It’s more like a child.
Finally, look at the eyes. Both characters have round eyes. In every area, the lines are rich, especially on the surface and outside. But this sign is more extreme in the eyes of the girl who raised her eyelashes.
Now it’s your turn! Take a step-by-step approach to drawing a simple anime head. Can you draw it from a different angle – maybe in profile or a 3/4 side view?
Can you change a character’s age or gender using the technique we just learned? Can you make your face long, round or oblong?
