To draw an anime or manga style face, start by designing the basic shape of the head. Draw a circle, then create a boss straight down the middle. Sketch a horizontal line about a third up from the bottom of the circle to mark where the eyes will be. Then draw another horizontal line near the bottom of the circle to indicate the position of the nose. Measure the distance between the eye line and the nose line, then measure the same distance down from the nose line and draw a third horizontal line for the chin. Next, take out the rod. The jawline should extend from the widest part of the circle down to the center of the line you made for the chin on either side. If you are drawing a child or a female character, make the curved jaw and pointed chin. For mature male characters, create a more angular jaw and wider chin. Finally, draw lines coming down on both sides of the forehead to mark the neck. Once the face shape is down, start adding facial features. First, sketch in the ears between the eye and nose lines. Then draw the tip of the nose where the vertical direction line and the nose line intersect. Since anime and manga characters often have very small noses, you don’t need to do much more than draw a small curved line to indicate the shape of the nose. Then, outline the eyes just below the first horizontal direction. Depending on how you want the character’s eyes to look, you can mark the top of the eye with a simple straight line or a thicker, curved lash line. Draw a base line for the eye below the top line, somewhere above the level of the tip of the nose. Create a semi-circle under the upper lash line to represent the iris, then add a pupil and some highlights to make the eyes look bright and shiny. Draw a curved line across each eye, just above the lash line, to represent the eyes. Add a curved horizontal line between the nose and chin for the mouth. If you want, you can add a slightly smaller line below to mark the lower lip. When you’re happy with the face, erase the guidelines and fill in details, such as the hair and any special features you want the character to have, such as freckles or wrinkles. Go over your pencil lines with ink and add shading or color to complete the drawing.
