How To Draw Optical Illusion Patterns – Have you ever seen one of those wonderful optical illusions and wondered how they were created? Tricking the eye on flat paper is easier than you think, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do in this tutorial. In addition, learning how to draw optical illusions can be a fun way to step away from realism for a while and experiment with shapes and colors without putting too much pressure on yourself to create an image.
First we need to decide what shape or object we want to represent. In this example, we’re going with a subject that’s not only easy to describe, but also quick to access – our hands. If the shape or object you select is not 100 percent square, this tutorial will work.
How To Draw Optical Illusion Patterns
Draw your hand or draw a selected object or shape in the center of the page with a light pencil stroke.

Now let’s move on to one of the most interesting parts – choosing a color palette. There are countless color combinations for it. You can choose a great palette like I did here. You can also create your optical illusion with warm colors, a random mix of colors or a monochromatic palette. Decide on a specific order in which you want the colors to appear on the paper and keep this in mind as you draw each line.
After choosing a color scheme, leave the foreground blank and start drawing thin straight lines on the background of your subject. Keep the lines straight, straight and a few millimeters apart.
When you reach the end of the palette, repeat the same sequence of colors, working your way down the paper with each new row.
: Try to keep the same distance between each line and always keep them straight and even, especially in the tricky areas between the fingers. This will make the next step much easier.

Once the background is completely covered, you’ll want to cover the surface of the shape you selected. Using the same colors as before, connect each line from one side of the shape to the other, but this time make sure the curves follow the curvature of your shape – in this case the arm. If you leave the lines curved, your shape will appear to the right of the page and have real volume.
