The last known dragon of his kind, Toothless – like his human rider and best friend Hiccup ( Jay Baruchel ) – comes to his senses five years after the first film. This means he is bigger, stronger and older in terms of his features. “Not only are they coming of age, but they’re both going to be heads of their clans,” says DeBlois. Also, Hiccup’s long-lost mother Valka (Cate Blanchett) discovers a neat new attribute: secret split dorsal fins on her back that give her extra flight control.

In the 2010 Dragon movie, there was a hierarchy of affected dragons, and Alpha is at the top. The toothy giant of the Arctic has the ability to impose its will on other dragons using ultrasonic means, and instead of breathing fire, it can swallow large amounts of seawater, store it in bosoms along its neck, and then deliver it to its target. “The intense icy breath of the Bewilderbeast destroys this water in the middle,” says DeBlois. “He leaves these very symbolic sentences to mark his path.”

The perfect partner for the human rider Fishlegs (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), Meatlug has the mind of a bulldog: really tough, but also cheerful and very sleepy – so much so that he often hangs his head while flying. DeBlois says that like the other Gronckles, Meatlug is skilled in combat when necessary. “It repeats spitting lava that can tear and burn anything.”
Stormfly’s appearance is based on a parrot, and he tends to be interested in shiny objects. But it is also deadly, it can pull out its tail with its spikes. DeBlois says he gave her more personality in the sequel, along with a couple of new traits: Stormfly likes to shop and has a keen sense of focus when it comes to objects and people she likes, and excellent tracking. “He can find Hiccup and Toothless anywhere on the edge of the Viking map.”
A master at finding anything that gives off an odor, Skullcrusher is a combination of a rhinoceros and a truffle pig with the color of a bug. Unlike other dragons, Skullcrusher has more than one rider in Dragons 2, but is extremely loyal and knows a good person when he meets one. “Despite his looks,” DeBlois says, “he’s just a lovable thug with a big ax nose that he uses to tear the place down.”
Hookfang likes to flame himself and make big dramatic revelations whenever possible. “He’s very sassy, and you can imagine him as a bull in the ring, a real showboat,” says DeBlois. “But he’s no match for Drago Bludvist’s intensity and dominance,” says the villain, voiced by Djimon Hounsou. Horrible wraiths like Hookfang also boast a fiery spit, which Hiccup uses to fuel his new weapon, the Dragon Blade.
