Hiccup Haddock introduces himself to the reader saying that he is the first Viking to befriend the Night Fury. He then tells the reader how each of his friends was paired with their own dragon: Astrid Hofferson with Stormfly, Fishlegs Ingerman with Meatlug, Snotlout Jorgensen with Hookfang, and Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston with Barf and Belch. Hiccup boasts that the Vikings of Berk have accepted dragons as their friends, making the island the first utopia of dragons and vikings. Hiccup explains that the Vikings began studying dragons and discovering new species, believing they had seen them all. However, they were wrong, as Hiccup told the reader that the latest discoveries were the Crimson Goregutter and the Hobgobbler that the Dragon Riders encountered during the mission. Hiccup explains that some people outside of Berk still hunt and kill dragons, such as the terrifying Grimmel Macabre. The hunter uses his own dragons, deathgrippers, whose venom is strong enough to calm or kill dragons. To capture Toothless, Grimmel uses a female Bright Fury as bait, but the plan fails and the two dragons begin to bond. Hiccup then explains the Light Fury’s ability to disappear. Since Grimmel knew Berk’s location, Hiccup decided to leave the island and go in search of the Hidden World, the legendary home of all dragons. Hiccup soon learns that the Bright Fury is following them, so he makes a new tail fin for Toothless so he can fly on his own. Bright Fury took Toothless to the Hidden World and Hiccup and Astrid followed them there. Hiccup then realized that the vikings and dragons had to separate so they could live in peace. Years later, Hiccup visits the Hidden World and learns that Toothless has three children named Nightlights.

In this menagerie of laughs, 2010’s How to Train Your Dragon stands out for its sweetness and seriousness. The story of Hiccup, the Viking, and his dragon Toothless included lots of mutual learning and hugs, and from Toothless – drooling kisses. The tone was darker, the message less Looney Tunes than life.

Writer-director Dean DeBlois’ sequel is even worse. Like The Empire Strikes Back or the second episode of The Lord of the Rings, this is a war movie with painful betrayals and heavy casualties. Deadly dangers lie not only for Hiccup (voice of Jay Baruchel), but for all the Vikings and their dragons. Rated PG but just as gruesome and dark as Game of Thrones, this medieval death game could be called Game of Dragons.

Appointed as the next king by his royal father Stoic (Gerard Butler), Hiccup is reunited with his mother Valka, missing and presumed dead in Dragon 1. She became the mother of a sanctuary for lost dragons. Voiced by Cate Blanchett, Valka is Galadriel, Jane Goodall and a Greenpeace activist in one elegant package.

But fairy tales can both take life and restore it. Beware that one key member of the dragon family will kill another key member. This makes for a strange movie opening on Father’s Day weekend.

The battles and deaths may be too intense for younger viewers. It’s a shame because the film’s luscious 3D palette, overseen by master cinematographer Roger Deakins, is a wonder of luminous creatures popping or gliding over grave sites, like reincarnated avatars at midnight.

If Dragon 1 served as a training wheel for DreamWorks’ darker tone, the new movie is a fully matured DreamWorks 2.0. Dragons are the second dominant species in the Barbary Islands, a race of powerful reptiles with two distinct traits: flight and fire-making, though not all dragons have either or both. They are a large diverse group with a variety of characteristics, differing among all species, and may comprise many orders at the taxonomic level. Most dragons can be tamed and have human companions.
