The Hunger Games
It follows Katniss Everdeen after she manages to escape the sugar-coated oppression of Panem, a post-apocalyptic America where she is forced to compete in multiple child-killing contests dressed as beauty pageants. At the start of the film, she’s hiding out in the secretive, highly militarized underground society of the long-lost District 13. Unsurprisingly, a reality TV star and revolutionary figure suddenly finds herself in exile on the brink of a developing rebellion, unable to do much. And even less surprisingly, it’s hard to make a good blockbuster about a hero who is almost worthless.
Susan Collins was easily the weakest book in the trilogy, so it’s not really fair to blame the actors and filmmakers for all of its weaknesses. If anything, it made most of the characters more likable. But they are already responsible for splitting the late book into two movies (
Will premiere next year), and there is no conceivable reason for this, other than to increase box office receipts. This is especially true when its basic structure prevents the cast and crew from playing to their strengths. The colorful capital of Panem and the arenas of the Hunger Games gave the designers carte blanche in the first two films to create some of the most beautiful sci-fi environments of the decade, and the whole thing was wrapped in a clever parody of modern media-saturated culture.
Instead, it’s gray and twisted, often visually indistinguishable from any number of other dystopias. His most intrusive recurring characters, like Ageless Hunger Games host Caesar Flickerman, are limited to seriously discussing the conflict, and his newcomers don’t do much more than hold the camera. There’s something potentially interesting about this contrast between Civil War and the capital business in general, but played out, it just feels like a missed opportunity. And the media bombast, which this time is much tamer and more conventional, is both less entertaining and less credible as effective propaganda.

Forcing Katniss to face her own limitations isn’t necessarily a bad thing. His frustrated impotence is far more exciting than the actual, widespread rebellion he’s stuck pretending is happening elsewhere. The filmmakers do this by looking at the war through the lens of propaganda, which gives it a lot of momentum.
