My only real gripe with Jack, aside from the intensity and violence of its fight scenes (which are too strong for younger kids), is that it goes on too long.
It’s a fantastic, CGI romp; who sees that for character development or even a completely believable story? It’s about adventurous fun, and it delivers on that.
It’s fast, exciting, and blessedly short—less than two hours, rather than, say, nine in three bladder-distorting parts.
The movie is so much like a video game that our fingers instinctively itch to do something, even though the video game Jack is not a game we really want to play.

While this Lord of the Rings fantasy never feels impersonal, it’s just as clumsy as the film’s big and scary monsters — and not nearly as powerful.

Once upon a time in the kingdom of Albion there lived a group of monks who wanted to talk to God. To this end, they created magic beans that had the power to create a bridge between heaven and earth. Unfortunately for these monks, there was another realm between heaven and earth, a terrifying land filled with enormous giants. These giants used this bridge to descend to the world below and ravage the people of Albion. Only one man stopped them cold, the brave Eric, King of Albion, who drove the giants back into their realm and severed the link between the worlds. Hundreds of years later, these events have become legends, and some people living in Albion believe them to be true. Enter Jack, a poor farmer with a penchant for mischief. As a result of some serious fortuitous events, he has unusual beans and takes in a runaway princess. When a storm causes the beans to get wet, the gigantic beanstalk carries his house, the princess, and everyone high into the clouds. Now Jack must embark on a mission to save the princess and face whatever is above…
Nicholas Hoult plays Jack with the naivety, sheer courage and stupidity that a reluctant hero should have. His portrayal is full of charm and his interactions with Eleanor Tomlinson are filled with genuine emotion. Tomlinson breaks free from the rebellious teenage role she was given to give an equally powerful performance. Sure, she needs a group of men to save her, but she plays a far cry from the helpless Disney princess she could have been. Ewan McGregor seems to be having a great time as the bravest knight in the whole realm. With a finely cut British accent and hair to die for, he’s boisterous and hilarious with a real heart. Similarly, Stanley Tucci enjoys the freedom to play against type as the duplicitous Lord Roderick. He has all the menace of a pantomime villain, and his comedy pairing with Ewan Bremner provides some of the biggest laughs in the film. Ian McShane is underused as King Bramwell, which is a shame given his dramatic abilities. Likewise, Eddie Marsan and Vovic Davis have little to do, but are welcome additions to the ensemble.
The best and worst thing Bryan Singer has done with this story is take pantomime to the level of a fully realized blockbuster. At its peak, the comedy and visually stunning sets offer the closest thing to a true fairy tale that audiences have seen. At worst, it comes across as camp, cheesy and a bit childish. Fortunately, the former offer is much larger than the later. The script has pacing issues with a slow introduction and a rambling finale that alternates between too much human action and not enough menacing giant action. As a result of that and the familiarity of the story, there is little real tension in the film. The visual effects are very well done as the giants are particularly well rendered and look like real characters. The 3D is particularly effective for the view from the giant eyes, but is completely unnecessary elsewhere. John Ottman’s score has a great aesthetic that lends real depth to the action on screen and channels the Errol Flynn-era fantasy adventures that clearly served as inspiration for Singer and others.
