Lamborghini Aventador How To Drive – The NÜRBURGRING Nordschleife in Germany is considered the ultimate proof of car performance. Known as the “Green Hell”, the 12.8-mile first Grand Prix circuit was fast, narrow and littered with skid marks from numerous drivers who failed to cross the finish line.

There are speed records for racing cars, motorbikes and non-road-legal engines, but the most revered is for production cars that you and I can drive on the road – and this is a title captured by the new Lamborghini Aventador SVJ last year. It laps in just under 6 minutes and 45 seconds, a lap record.

Meanwhile, the Aventador SVJ has bragging rights over every other car out there. But how do you test something so fast on a public road in Britain? Capable of 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph, the SVJ looks as menacing as a great white shark on its lunch break.

Certainly, the SVJ is the most powerful Lamborghini ever to leave the company’s Sant’Agata production facility near Bologna. It’s also likely the swan song for the company’s old-school V12 engine. Because supercar makers are turning their attention to battery power to unveil a technologically advanced, greener hybrid.

To figure out what the defining moment was, Lamborghini tuned and modified the outgoing V12 to extract every last ounce of power.

Changes include titanium valves, a redesigned cylinder head and a lighter flywheel – the sort of stuff motoring geeks would salivate over. These help boost power and reduce the low-slung SUV’s weight by more than 50kg to a trim 1,525kg – not much more than the bog-standard Ford Focus.

Therefore, the SVJ revs noisier above 8,500 rpm and offers a wide range of torque transferred to the road through a permanent four-wheel-drive system modified for more rear axle bias, thereby improving handling.

I doubt many Lambo owners will lift the rear-mounted, carbon-fiber cover to see the engine. If they do, they will find amazing architecture.

Above this space is the latest version of Lamborghini’s active aerodynamic spoiler system, which draws attention like a radar beacon. The massive rear wing isn’t just for show. It increases downforce by more than 40% compared to the previous Aventador SV.

It’s clever stuff that needs a Power Point presentation to explain properly. In a fast corner, the forces created by the rear wing are diverted to the left or right, increasing grip in the rear wheel, where it is essential to keep the SVJ glued to the road.

It works great, but also attracts unattractive car-spotters in your wake with smartphone cameras pressed to their windscreens. Expect to go viral on social media if you crash – this is such a car. But at least you won’t see too much of your pursuers – the central pillar supporting the spoiler is so oddly placed that it obstructs visibility. You can also throw in the rear view mirror and shave a few extra ounces off the scale.

A stab in the throat causes Brian Baruch to huff and puff like he’s having an asthma attack. Not a neighborhood-friendly setting for pesky, early morning starters, so don’t expect another barbecue invitation from Number 17.

However, for clear visuals and sonic boom, the SVJ rivals the Concorde. Once the wing doors are lifted to reveal a stunning mix of imitation suede and leather in the cabin, it’s tight for space inside. Bucket seats are a pain on a long journey, but visibility and headroom are an afterthought.

Apart from my stained handkerchief, there is nowhere to hide the phone and the unusual dashboard layout looks like it was stolen from an original Tardis. The flip-up cover that protects the starter button is taken from the Top Gun Fighter. The wow factor for new travelers is undeniable, but the flap, when left open, can catch a shirt cuff at the most awkward moments.

At least Lamborghini offered the silly steering wheel-mounted indicator buttons on the Huracan, its wild sister car equally deserving of the Raging Bull badge. Impossible to work at night, the small switches are replaced by a conventional column stack on the Aventador.

Lamborghini Aventador Goes Out With A Bang

Efficient Ferraris and soulless McLarens can’t hold a candle to the vibrations and resonant thrills of the supersonic SVJ.

There’s nothing easy or straightforward about any Aventador—even climbing in and out is a Houdini-style feat designed to handle all passengers taller than 6 feet. The music system is so thin, it sounds like the DJ is digging out an antique phonograph, and the limited luggage space under the hood has to be made up for by filling the passenger footwell.

Worst of all, the single-clutch gearbox is almost laughably antiquated. At low speeds, residents work out a Jane Fonda-worthy head shake, usually exclaiming: “That’s not my worst gear change, honestly.”

While the shift is smooth, things improve dramatically at higher speeds. Not that you would notice, because using the SVJ in a public way requires full attention.

Straightaway performance in the SVJ is excellent. And when you go into a corner, every high-revving downshift in the massive paddle-shifters is pure drama, especially on a wet British road in winter. The whole performance and grip takes some getting used to.

All set to an old-fashioned V12 soundtrack and extreme styling, the Aventador delivers a sensory overload rarely seen in any car these days. Modern, efficient Ferraris and soulless McLarens can’t hold a candle to the vibrations and resonant thrills of the supersonic SVJ, which really sticks the boot.

Of course, you can expect nothing more than £350,000. If you want to make an entry, there is very little on the road screaming as loud as a Lamborghini. And that price excludes some optional equipment on my test car, including a ‘Viola’ paint job for £9,270 and a carbon engine rocker cover for £4,200 (which I said was pretty).

In any other circumstances, it would be fair to point out that the Aventador is a two-seater that has reached its sell-by date. But what Lamborghini has done here is transform an aging, rickety supercar into something even more spectacular. Just for a last ditch, just for old times sake – and to annoy the neighbors. The Lamborghini Aventador is brutally powerful and surprisingly agile for its size, making it one of the most capable Lamborghinis ever produced.

“With 640 horsepower, it’s no secret that the Huracan Sto is fast… really fast. It combines the best elements of the smaller, lighter Superleggera and the more powerful, but heavier Aventador. The Huracan features an all-new chassis .offset mid-mounted 5.2L V10, advanced rear-wheel-drive system and smooth and quick-shifting dual-clutch transmission by Lamborghini, making it one of the easiest Lamborghinis to drive, but without losing the iconic and aggressive feel you expect From a Lamborghini.”
