Most of the Avatar films dealt with the expansionist policies of the Moto Nation and their internal politics, and Gene Luen Yang’s main focus was on the comics. That Zuko is a guardian and rejects the previous government’s policies of brutality and colonialism is not universally accepted, and the New Ozai Society, named after the former ruler, plans to restore the status quo. Yang has drawn plots and characters for the series before, but for the first time, Smoke and Shadow doesn’t stand alone and has to know more about the series. It tells the full story of Mai and Ty Lee teaming up to try and stop the Avatar and prevent Zuko from taking control. We saw Mai leave Zuko in The Promise, and Ty Lee returns here, along with Zuko’s patron Suki in the Earth Kingdom.

Zuko’s continuity begins at the end of the Quest when he returns home with his newfound family and straight into trouble with the New Ozai Society. It is interesting to see that having achieved his goal in the Hunt, Ursa has not forgotten and returning home after a long absence is one of the conflicting emotions that are well represented. Participating in this is Gurihiru’s art team, giving Ursa a sense of gravitas, and her re-entering the palace scene is beautiful and interesting, while being good with Kiyi’s baby responses, especially how to act. his mother has changed.

For all the intrigue between the disgruntled citizens of the Fire Nation, returning characters and action, it’s still clear that Aang’s only appearance is a cameo, which is unusual for a main character. Yang is preparing a complete story in three chapters, but when this is collected in hardcover together with part two, it won’t make much difference. The fourth Avatar collaboration between Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru continues the wonderful stories they create together.

Of the four worlds that make up the world of the Avatar, the world of fire is shown the most, and with smoke and shadow, the new ruler Zuko is also tested. Although things have changed and he wants to create a new path for a country that has developed in the past, it is not an easy task to convince his people to stand with him. The new Ozai Society is named after a former ruler, there is more to their plans to overthrow Zuko and return to their old ways, and they have powerful new allies in the Kemurikage. Until recently, they were thought to be myths, stories told to keep children in line, rather than real child thieves doing bad things. The political upheaval is especially difficult for Mai, whose father runs the gang and who recently broke off her relationship with Zuko (see The Promise).

Despite the title, Smoke and Shadow is much more straightforward than Yang’s previous Avatar stories. It twists and turns, but there is only one real bomb, clearly shown. This is because Yang gets involved in difficult relationships and it’s not until the end that we get to know where the other people are. It’s mixed with a little bit of Ursa returning home to the Fire Nation for the first time from exile (see The Hunt), and all the emotions it evokes. It’s a much darker story than previous Avatar entries, and having such strong emotions in Gurihiru’s character ensures that it doesn’t turn into melodrama.

Jean Luen Yang started making comics in the fifth grade. Since then, he has written and illustrated several titles. His 2006 book, American Born Chinese, was the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first recipient of the American Library Association’s Michael L. Printz Award. It also won an Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album – New. His 2013 novel Boxers & Saints was nominated for a National Book Award and an LA Times Book Award. Gene is currently writing the sequel to Nickelodeon’s hit animated film, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Shadow Hero, his comic book series with Sonny Liu, brought to life the Green Turtle, an obscure character from the 1940s who was arguably the first Asian American hero. The Shadow Hero is now available as a digital e-book through Amazon Kindle. The Slings and Arrows Graphic Novel Guide doesn’t care where you’ve been, where you’re going, or where you are. Avatar: The Last Airbender Smoke And Shadow Library Edition Buch

Again, trouble starts again between the Fire Nation dissidents, and again, Jin Luen Yang ended the chapter surprisingly, but this time it was predictable. Although Yang shows interest in Episode One, most people don’t realize it until the end of Episode Two. In Aang and Fire, Master Zuko discovered that the spirits called the Kemurikage hadn’t worked in many generations, so the people who were now holding children must be some kind of trickster, which didn’t make it any easier to deal with. Unfortunately, Zuko’s solution to this situation would only increase his anger.

The assembled kidnapped children are shown several times and Gurihiru does his best to make them look cute and funny. This is in keeping with their usual high quality graphics. Although this is a darker story than most Avatar scripts, there is such joy on many people’s faces.

Another sign of the quality of Jan’s writing is evident in the middle. Most of the other writers would have left things fake after revealing Kemurikage’s past, but Yang has a good ending regarding Mai’s personality and her youth. It all culminates in a fight that has been brewing since Zuko made the mistake of starting the Hunt, but Yang defies expectations by making a point rather than misrepresenting something for the sake of observation. It reinforces its regular and surprising formula and ends up being more memorable than any other fight. If this
