Of the four worlds that make up the world of the Avatar, the world of fire is shown the most, and with smoke and shadow, the new ruler Zuko is also tested. Although things have changed and he wants to create a new path for a country that has developed in the past, it is not an easy task to convince his people to stand with him. The new Ozai Society is named after a former ruler, there is more to their plans to overthrow Zuko and return to their old ways, and they have powerful new allies in the Kemurikage. Until recently, they were thought to be myths, stories told to keep children in line, rather than real child thieves doing bad things. The political upheaval is especially difficult for Mai, whose father runs the gang and who recently broke off her relationship with Zuko (see The Promise).
Despite the title, Smoke and Shadow is much more straightforward than Yang’s previous Avatar stories. It twists and turns, but there is only one real bomb, clearly shown. This is because Yang gets involved in difficult relationships and it’s not until the end that we get to know where the other people are. It’s mixed with a little bit of Ursa returning home to the Fire Nation for the first time from exile (see The Hunt), and all the emotions it evokes. It’s a much darker story than previous Avatar entries, and having such strong emotions in Gurihiru’s character ensures that it doesn’t turn into melodrama.

Again, trouble starts again between the Fire Nation dissidents, and again, Jin Luen Yang ended the chapter surprisingly, but this time it was predictable. Most of the other writers would have left things fake after revealing Kemurikage’s past, but Yang has a good ending regarding Mai’s personality and her youth. It all culminates in a fight that has been brewing since Zuko made the mistake of starting the Hunt, but Yang defies expectations by making a point rather than misrepresenting something for the sake of observation.
