If you don’t think Thibaut Courtois is the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment, spare me your footballing opinion. Please! Shot after shot, Courtois defended, and he did so with the presence of mind to always send the ball to full safety. Madrid have been telling the world for months that they are the best on the planet, yet their words have fallen on deaf ears. Now, in the Champions League final, Courtois has certainly proved that he is the best. I apologize to Mohamed Salah. You just didn’t get the chance.
He had a completion rate of 97.2 per cent. Why was I so worried about him in front of Mo Salah and the Liverpool press? It went up.
He quietly went about his business and uplifted everyone around him, as he always does. It was so good that David Alaba returned to Real Madrid’s starting line-up for the Champions League final. He wins wherever he goes and it was beautiful to see his emotional reaction to the win. Alaba had four tackles, two interceptions and an impressive three blocked shots. And who can forget the goal that should have been scored for Karim Benzema?
Animal. Some in Madrid are worried about his recent mistakes, but Ander Militao has shown why he is one of the best young centre-backs in Europe this season. Scratch that, that was the best. Militão showed the heart of a lion, including his Sergio Ramos in every tackle, putting his body on the line against the best attacking trio in the world.

Another solid performance from Dani Carvajal, who as one of the man of the match alongside Thibaut Courtois (though, apparently, the nod is the Belgian affectionately called the Giraffe by Madrid fans). Carvajal stakes everything and proves that he is far from a liability. Up against the best right-back in the world in Trent Alexander-Arnold, Carvajal showed he is still king. A goal from Vinicius Júnior was enough to see Real Madrid win their 14th European Cup, a goal notable for the heroics of Thibaut Courtois.
In the end, Liverpool’s attempt to get the treble was to no avail as they could not overcome the inspirational goalkeeper who was outstanding.
