The Lord of the Rings began as a sequel to Tolkien’s 1937 children’s fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually evolved into a much larger work. It was written gradually between 1937 and 1949, most of it during the Second World War in letters to her son, “and finally, after polishing it to her satisfaction, she published it as a trilogy by 1954 to 1955, volume by volume, which she eagerly awaited an ever-increasing audience. It is considered as] one of the lasting contributions of this century to that boundary of literature between youth and old age. It seems destined to become the contribution of this century to that select list of books which, over the ages, continues until it is read with almost equal pleasure by children and adults.” (Eyre, 134- 35) Became the third best-selling novel of all time with 150 million copies sold. When you shop through Movies Anywhere, we combine your favorite movies from your connected digital retailers into one synchronized collection.Join now

In the first part of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, a shy young hobbit named Frodo Baggins inherits a simple golden ring. He knows that the ring has power, but not that he himself has the secret to the survival – or enslavement – of the entire world. Now, accompanied by a wizard, an elf, a dwarf, two men and three loyal hobbit friends, Frodo must become the greatest hero the world has ever known to save the land and the people he loves.
