This first edition, first edition, is rare and highly collected. The first batch is 3000 pieces, the second batch is 3250 pieces, and the third batch is only 7000 pieces. Original, unrestored dust jacket featuring the iconic ‘Eye of Sauron’ design. All uncut jackets priced at ’21s net’. All volumes in original publisher’s red cloth with gold foil tool titles on the spine. The top of the block text is displayed in red on all pages. Dull pencil on sheets 1 and 2 for easy erasing. Neat ink notes on ffep from Volume 1 ‘Joyce CarjerSmith sic’. Book 1 has some bumps on the edges of the spine and a little fade in the fabric here. There are 2 small, faded marks. One along the bottom edge of the cover and one on the front. The jacket has toning and darkening down the spine. The spine edges are lightly worn with shallow chips, so the text is unaffected. Divide shallowly, about 1 cm long, to the hinge at the top. Creation on the spine of imprint ‘J. R.R.’ Although still readable. A very small black mark covering the ‘t’ in the ‘section’ all the way to the spine. Tons of endpapers. Unexpected frequent sanding on some pages, margins and mostly backing. When the map is expanded, it remains as it is. clean and crisp. 424pp foldable map. The second book has some bumps and creases on the back edge of the fabric and a slight crease on the bottom edge of the cover. The jacket is in dark tones up to the spine. A shallow chip on the back edge and a shallow loss (approximately 1 cm long) on the upper left side of the spine do not affect the text. Divide the bottom of the jacket about 1.5 cm long. Light toning on endpapers. There is occasional very faint wear on the back page. Unfold the map and keep it as it is now. clean and crisp. 352pp foldable map. Volume 3 has very slight wear on the back of the cloth binding. Otherwise it’s sharp. The jacket is slick at the ends but doesn’t come off very well and is breezy. Faint toning and ffep and some foxing on the rear endpaper. Very faint sanding on the edges of the text block. When the map is expanded, it remains as it is.
