Learning to make Magic: The Gathering decks is perhaps one of the most satisfying parts of the trading card game. While learning how to play Magic: The Gathering is important, winning is a lot more fun when you’ve built your deck from scratch.

While you’ll learn a lot about the fine art of deck building the more you practice, there are some basic tips that can really help you get to the best possible spot. That’s why we’ve put together a very helpful guide on how to build a Magic: The Gathering deck as a beginner. Follow them and you will be ready to become a real brewer.
First you need to decide what format you are building a deck for. Of course, you’ll be introduced to the most popular Magic: The Gathering formats from our helpful guide here. This will determine what sets you can use as well as the minimum deck size.
If you are building a limited deck you should have at least 40 cards. If you’re building a constructed deck, you’ll need at least 60 cards, plus a 15-card sideboard. Finally, if you are making one for a commander or melee, you will need one card per commander and 99 for commander and 59 for melee.
Next, you need to determine what you want your deck to do based on the different Magic: The Gathering deck types. Are you planning to build an aggro deck or a control deck? Do you want it to be creature-based or more focused on planeswalkers or magic? What do you really want your win situation to be? Do you want to be aggressive and linear, or do you want to be reactive and more flexible? If you are going to start with a new drink (not a cup of tea, but a deck idea) you should have a rough idea of all these things. Once you know how you want to win the game, you can start going over what cards to actually play in it.

Next, you’ll want to decide which of MTG’s five mana colors you’re going to use. It helps to have a rough idea of what the different Magic: Gathering mana colors mean, of course.
In general, if you’re building an aggro deck, you’ll probably want to incorporate red in some way. Likewise, if you’re going to build a control deck, you’ll probably want to use Blue. You never want to choose more than three colors (at least most of the time) and if you want to be safe, two is probably the best way to go.
One color will mean all your lands will allow you to cast spells you have, but adding a second color dramatically increases the pool of cards you can choose from. This in turn makes it much easier to find other cards that fit your game plan. The specific colors for each strategy vary by format. Also, there are always ways to build decks in colors that don’t make sense, there are some blue aggro decks, but that’s not common and you shouldn’t try to break the mold with your first deck.
It’s time to decide on the number of lands in your deck. Land cards are ones that allow you to cast a spell each turn by granting mana, but you can usually only cast one per turn. Also, if you get to the late game, drawing a land can be the end of you. You may find yourself out of land throughout the game or with too much land, so knowing the right amount is essential to creating a Magic: The Gathering deck from scratch.

Aggro decks are usually made up of low cost cards; This means you can afford less land as a result. Midrange and control decks tend to have a higher concentration of expensive cards, which means you’ll need more lands. In general, you always want 20 to 26 lands in a 60-card deck, so it’s all about understanding your plan and figuring it out from there.
You need to understand your mind curve. Most importantly, you need to control it. “Mana curve” is a term used to describe the mana costs of your cards. If you have a lot of cards that cost six and seven mana, you have a high mana curve. If your deck is made up entirely of two-drops (cards that cost two mana), you have a low mana curve. In general, you’ll want your mana curve to be bell-shaped, with some one- and two-mana spells, a high concentration of three to four drops, and then some cards that cost five or more.
Obviously, this depends on the type of Magic: The Gathering deck you’re building as a starter, but it’s important to keep in mind. You want to be able to cast a spell or two every turn, and having too many expensive cards will prevent you from doing that. If you plan to play a long game, you also want your cards to be effective, so you’ll need some expensive high-impact cards to close out the game when you’re done.
Now you will need to decide how much of each card to keep. You can keep up to four of each card in your deck, such as creatures and spells. The “to” part of this rule is important to note because you won’t always want four copies of a card in your deck.
