This series is a great way to introduce chapter books to young readers. I was able to read it to my former first graders and current kindergartners and they love it.

We’ve gone through about 50 of the 55 books in the original series this year, and it’s still not enough!

No, we haven’t done 50 readings out loud. We read in different ways! My son loved reading audiobooks in the back of the car, sitting in front of the stereo, or digging in the dirt! By the end of preschool, he even read a little to me!

Carnival At Candlelight

Series turning 30 in 2022. Since the introduction of the first of Mary Pope Osborne’s bestselling series of children’s books that are now a children’s classic in 1992, they have delighted generations of young readers. Classic versions of the series have been passed down from parents to children, while newer graphic versions have become some of the best graphic novels for children.

The series follows the adventures of siblings Jack and Annie Smith, who are transported in a magical treehouse to different parts of the world and different periods of history (and the past). They always have a mission, which coincides with an important event in history: Jack and Annie witness the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79, crossed the Delaware River by George Washington in 1776 and witnessed the great earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco.

Through brilliant storytelling, use of imagination and a sprinkling of magic, Osborne’s books have sparked the curiosity and imagination of countless young readers. Because it includes so many different people and cultures, it has been widely recognized as one of the best children’s books about diversity.

The first Magic Tree House book introduces readers to heroic siblings Jack and Annie as they discover the magical tree house. It was transported 65 million years ago to the late Cretaceous period. A friendly pteranodon saves them from a hungry T-Rex, but they must still figure out how to get home in the dark, or risk turning into dinosaurs. Before escaping to Pennsylvania, they find an unusual souvenir: a gold medallion with the inscription M. Mysterious. In this second episode, Jack and Annie are soon out of the clutches of the T-Rex and are safe in their treehouse as they are transported to medieval England, where they stumble upon a medieval castle and a brave knight. But the two brothers become unwelcome guests at the party, as clues pile up and the mystery of their mobile tree house deepens.

Your book Ancient Egypt is where mummies are at large! Jack and Annie must help the spirit of old Queen Hotby to find the Book of the Dead and continue back to the treehouse, before they become mothers. Here kids will learn more about the ancient world, hieroglyphics and how the pyramids were built – some of the most beautiful man-made structures in history.

It is, hoo, hoo! In book #4, Annie and Jack are stranded on the high seas, where they (naturally) encounter industrious pirates who set out in search of buried treasure. On the way, they meet a mysterious figure who has played a part in all their overtures up to this point: Morgan le Fay from Arthurian legend, an M puzzle. Kids will love that our heroes use their wits and brains to get out of Close Call – as much as they love pirate jokes.

Desperate to follow the mysterious path of Morgan le Fay, the witch they meet in the last book, Annie and Jack travel to ancient Japan, where they stumble upon a ninja master’s dungeon. In this book, they must collect magical items to save Morgan, while making sure to avoid a gang of samurai warriors. If ancient Japan sounds interesting, wait until you read this stuff on modern-day Japan!

Still trying to help Morgan le Fay break the spell placed on her, the sisters get lost in the Amazon jungle. In Book #6, they encounter tigers, crocodiles, killer ants, vampire bats and other feathered and furry creatures in the Amazon jungle in search of a magical object. Fortunately, a friendly mouse named Peanut helps them navigate this dangerous terrain.

Still on Morgan’s trail and looking for something else to enhance her magic, in this book Jack and Annie jump into the Ice Age – with a wet swim! In their race to stay warm, reach their goal and return to the treehouse, the two men encounter the Cro-Magnons, or first humans. They also learn about ancient cave art and have a brush with fearsome prehistoric animals, like woolly mammoths and sabertooth tigers, before escaping.

In Book #8, Jack and Annie’s extraterrestrial adventures go as they travel to the moon to help Morgan. Donning spacesuits but running out of oxygen, the brothers search for something else, meet a mysterious lunar inhabitant and other lunar mysteries, and race back to Earth while still breathing.
